ISO 20022, CIPS or Wise: What's Actually Replacing SWIFT for International Payments

Short answer

In 2026 no single system has replaced SWIFT. ISO 20022 is a message standard that T2 and Fedwire use. CIPS is China's renminbi clearing system. Wise is a payment platform. For Indian exporters, every route ends at an authorised bank or person under FEMA rules, with an EDF, purpose code, FIRC or FIRA and a GST LUT.

How do Wise and a bank SWIFT transfer compare for Indian exporters receiving international payments in 2026?

Platforms named in the question are shown alongside the 2 highest payouts among the platforms this site covers, ranked by the INR received on a $5,000 invoice. Fees were checked on 30 Sept 2026.

Which RBI rule governs money that reaches India over SWIFT, CIPS or a platform such as Wise?

The same RBI rules apply whichever rail carries the payment. The FEMA Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations 2023 require receipts from abroad to come through an authorised bank or authorised person, and the FEMA Export and Import Regulations 2026, in force from 1 October 2026, set the EDF, realisation and reporting duties. No rule reviewed for this page names SWIFT, ISO 20022 or CIPS.

Which option leaves the most rupees when a foreign client pays $500, $2,000 or $5,000?

Each row applies the platform's published fee, FX markup and 18% GST on the fee to the XE mid-market rate for 4 Nov 2026. Platforms without full published pricing are not included.

For example, on a $2,000 invoice Skydo pays about ₹1,87,239 and Wise Business about ₹1,85,635 at today's reference rate, a difference of ₹1,604.

What documents and GST apply to payments received over SWIFT, CIPS or Wise?

The documents and GST treatment depend on the export, not on the payment rail. A service counts as an export under IGST Act s.2(6) when, among other conditions, payment is received in convertible foreign exchange or in Indian Rupees wherever permitted by the RBI. Exports are zero-rated under s.16, and an LUT under Rule 96A lets you export without paying IGST.

What changed in the rules this year?

In 2026 the RBI replaced India's export rules and pushed banks to credit inward payments faster. The FEMA Export and Import Regulations 2026 took effect on 1 October 2026, and Circular No. 20 supersedes the earlier export Master Direction and SOFTEX circulars from the same date.

  • Export rules: The FEMA Regulations 2026 apply from 1 October 2026, with the EDF for services due within 30 days from the end of the invoice month.
  • Faster credit: Under RBI/2026-27/08 of 9 April 2026, banks must reconcile nostro accounts normally within one hour and try to credit inward payments the same business day, from six months after the circular date.
  • Rupee trade: Circular No. 19 of 17 July 2026 consolidated the Special Rupee Vostro Account rules and superseded earlier circulars.
  • US wires: The Federal Reserve rescheduled its November 2026 Fedwire release to November 2027, as announced on 27 August 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is ISO 20022 a replacement for SWIFT when a foreign client pays an Indian exporter in 2026?

No. ISO 20022 is a messaging standard that describes payment data, and banks still move the money. The ECB says T2 uses ISO 20022, and the Fedwire Funds Service has migrated to ISO 20022. For an Indian exporter, the receipt still has to reach an authorised bank under Reg 3(2) of the Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations.

Can an Indian freelancer receive a client payment through CIPS in 2026?

Only through a bank. CIPS is a wholesale system for RMB cross-border payments that works through direct and indirect participant banks, and it clears RMB and Hong Kong Dollars. Under Reg 3(2)(I)(a)(iii), receipts from countries outside the ACU can be in any foreign currency. Ask your AD bank whether it can receive RMB.

Does a payment through Wise or another platform count as a FEMA export receipt in 2026?

The FEMA test is the channel. Under Reg 3(2) of the Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations, receipts must come through an authorised bank or authorised person. Check that the rupees reach your account through an AD bank and that you get a FIRC or FIRA. The comparison table on this page lists each platform's documents.

Can a client in Europe pay an Indian bank account by SEPA transfer?

Not directly. The ECB describes SEPA as a scheme for euro credit transfers, instant transfers and direct debits across a region of 41 European countries, and India is not one of them. A euro payment to India therefore travels outside SEPA, for example as a bank wire or through a provider that pays out in India.

How fast must an Indian bank credit an inward SWIFT payment under the RBI 2026 circular?

Under RBI/2026-27/08, the directions take effect six months from 9 April 2026. Banks must then inform you immediately on receipt of the inward message and reconcile nostro accounts normally within one hour. They must try to credit payments received during forex market hours the same business day, and later ones the next business day.

Can a foreign client pay an Indian exporter in rupees through a Special Rupee Vostro Account instead of SWIFT dollars?

Yes, if the client's bank holds an SRVA with an Indian AD bank under Circular No. 19. The RBI SRVA FAQ calls it an additional arrangement to the existing system. Exports invoiced or settled in rupees get twelve months for realisation under Reg 5(1). See Special Rupee Vostro Accounts.

Does the FETERS purpose code change when a client pays over CIPS, SEPA or Wise instead of SWIFT?

No rule reviewed links the purpose code to the payment rail. The AD bank reports every foreign trade transaction in FETERS under Reg 18(2), and the purpose code list describes the type of transaction, such as software or consulting services. See the RBI purpose codes list for exporters.

Do Ripple or Visa Direct change the GST zero rating of an export of services in 2026?

The GST test does not name any rail. Under IGST Act s.2(6), payment must be received in convertible foreign exchange or in rupees wherever the RBI permits, along with the other conditions. An export is a zero-rated supply under s.16. Ask your AD bank whether a given route counts as a permitted receipt.
