Short answer

Freelancing platform fees differ in who pays and how much. Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee. Fiverr keeps 20% of each order, so sellers earn 80%. Toptal says it takes no cut of a freelancer's rate. Contra is commission-free for freelancers but lists a per-payment platform fee on its free plan.

What fees do Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal and Contra charge freelancers?

Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal and Contra each charge freelancers in a different way. Two of them take a share of every payment, one says it takes nothing from the freelancer's rate, and one charges flat platform fees that a paid plan removes. Clients also pay their own fees on Upwork, Fiverr and Toptal, which affects the price your client sees.

  • Upwork: Charges a Freelancer Service Fee that is a variable fee, based on factors such as client demand, freelancer supply, job category and membership plan. The rate that applies to a contract stays fixed for the life of that contract (Upwork Fee and ACH Authorization Agreement, Section 2.1).
  • Fiverr: Credits the seller with Earnings equal to 80% of the purchase amount for each completed order, and 80% of the hourly rate on Hourly Contracts (Fiverr Payment Terms, Section 2.1).
  • Toptal: States that talent members set their own rates and Toptal does not take a cut from that. Payment is in USD (Toptal Talent FAQ).
  • Contra: Describes itself as commission-free for all creatives. On the free plan it lists a platform fee of US$15 on payments of US$1 to US$499 and US$29 on payments of US$500 or more, which the Pro plan waives (Contra fees overview).
  • Payouts: All four platforms pay in US dollars, so a payout to an Indian bank account involves a conversion to rupees and, on Fiverr and Contra, a withdrawal or processor fee set by the payment provider.

Every platform says it can change its fees. Upwork's agreement says the pricing method may change without notice, though it promises advance notice of fee increases affecting current users. Check each platform's own fee page on the day you price a project, and keep a copy of the page with your records.

Which freelancing platform fee structure suits which kind of Indian freelancer?

Which freelancing platform fee structure suits an Indian freelancer depends on how you find clients and how large each payment is. A percentage fee costs more on large projects. A flat platform fee costs more on small payments. The table sets out each platform's freelancer-side fee as published on its own pages.

How do you compare the real cost of a freelancing platform for one project?

You compare the real cost of a freelancing platform by working out what reaches your Indian bank account from the same project price. Start with the platform's share, subtract the withdrawal or payout fee, then account for the currency conversion to rupees. Do the same sum for each platform you use.

  1. Fix one project price in US dollars, for example US$1,000, so every platform is compared on the same figure.
  2. Subtract the platform's freelancer-side fee: the variable Upwork service fee shown on your contract, 20% on Fiverr, nothing on Toptal, or the free-plan platform fee on Contra if you are not on Pro and the fee falls on you.
  3. Subtract any subscription you pay to stay active, such as a Contra Pro plan or an Upwork Freelancer Membership, spread across the projects it covers.
  4. Subtract the withdrawal or payout fee for your chosen method. Fiverr lists US$3 per Local Bank Transfer and Contra's fee table lists US$1.25 for local INR bank payouts to India.
  5. Note the exchange rate applied when US dollars become rupees, and compare it with a reference rate for the same day to estimate the conversion cost.
  6. Divide the total of all deductions by the project price to get your effective cost as a percentage.

Why does the Upwork Freelancer Service Fee not have one fixed percentage?

Upwork's Fee and ACH Authorization Agreement describes the Freelancer Service Fee as a variable fee calculated by proprietary algorithms. Components may include client demand, freelancer supply, job category and membership plan. Upwork shows the fee for a contract on the site, and that rate stays fixed for the life of the contract.

  • Freelancer Initiated Direct Contracts carry a flat 5% fee.
  • Enterprise Client contracts carry a 10% fee unless the Enterprise Client contract provides otherwise.
  • Alternate Pricing, such as older contracts or advertised discounts, can apply a fixed percent or no Service Fee.

Does Fiverr's 20% fee apply to tips and Logo Maker sales?

Fiverr's Payment Terms set seller Earnings at 80% for orders and Hourly Contracts. Logo Maker sales use a separate tier-based model where the seller earns between 20% and 50% of each sale, depending on the tier.

  • Check the Payment Terms for any extra or redesign services, which carry their own service fee charged to the buyer.

Who pays the Contra payment processing fees, the client or the freelancer?

Contra's Terms of Service say clients are responsible for third-party payment processing fees, and foreign exchange fees are paid by the party incurring them. Its fees overview says payout processor fees are passed on to the freelancer and shown at the time of withdrawal.

  • Card payments: 2.9% plus 30 cents for domestic cards, with extra charges for international cards and currency conversion.
  • ACH: 0.8%, capped at US$5.00 per successful charge.

What are the withdrawal and payout fees on Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal and Contra for India?

Withdrawal and payout fees for India depend on the platform and the method you choose. Fiverr and Contra publish their fees on their own pages. Upwork says payment method fees are posted on its site. Toptal's public FAQ does not list a payout fee. The table shows only what each platform publishes.

What happens if an Indian freelancer ignores platform fees when pricing and reporting exports?

If an Indian freelancer ignores platform fees, the rupees received fall short of the price quoted and the bank credit may not match the export value declared. Platform fees, payout fees and conversion costs are taken before the money reaches India. Planning for them keeps your pricing, books and FEMA paperwork consistent.

  • Lower income: A 20% Fiverr share or a variable Upwork service fee comes off every payment, before any withdrawal or conversion cost.
  • Value mismatch: Regulation 5(1) of the 2026 FEMA Regulations requires the full export value of services to be realised and repatriated within nine months from the invoice date. A net credit after fees is lower than the gross value.
  • Reduction: Regulation 6 of the 2026 FEMA Regulations lets your AD bank allow a reduction in export value, and for invoices up to Rs 10 lakh it may be permitted on your declaration.
  • Held funds: Clearance periods and fraud reviews can delay payouts. Fiverr may disable withdrawals in some cases, and Contra says some payouts are held for review.
  • Lost fees: Upwork says Marketplace Fees are not refunded when a funded project is cancelled, and Contra's platform fees are non-refundable.

Price each project with the platform's full cost in mind, keep the platform's transaction report with each invoice, and ask your AD bank how it records platform fees deducted before the money reached India. See export realisation period and EDF form for exports for the FEMA steps.

What is the timeline for getting paid and reporting a freelancing platform payment in India?

The timeline for a freelancing platform payment runs from the platform's clearance period to the FEMA deadlines in India. Platforms hold funds for between 4 and 14 days before you can withdraw. In India, the EDF for services is due within 30 days from the end of the invoice month, and the money must be realised within nine months.

What mistakes do Indian freelancers make when comparing freelancing platform fees?

  • Old rates: Quoting fee figures from old posts instead of each platform's current terms. Fiverr's Payment Terms showed a last update of September 2026, and Upwork's fee agreement was effective from 20 July 2026, when we checked.
  • Fixed Upwork rate: Assuming one Upwork percentage for every contract. The service fee is variable and is fixed per contract when the contract starts.
  • Client fees: Ignoring the fees the client pays, such as Fiverr's 5.5% service fee or Upwork's Marketplace Fee, which raise the client's total price.
  • Payout costs: Counting only the platform's share and forgetting withdrawal fees and the currency conversion to rupees.
  • Small payments: Using Contra's free plan for many small invoices, where a flat US$15 fee is a larger share of each payment.
  • Skipping EDF: Treating platform payouts as outside FEMA. The EDF and realisation rules in the 2026 Regulations still apply to services exports.
  • Wrong code: Not checking the purpose code your bank records for platform payouts. See purpose code for Upwork and Fiverr payments.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Fiverr deduct from a US$100 Gig order for an Indian seller?

Fiverr credits sellers with 80% of the purchase amount, so a US$100 Gig order gives US$80 in Earnings under its Payment Terms. The buyer pays the 5.5% service fee and the US$3.5 small order fee separately. A US$3 Local Bank Transfer fee and conversion costs then apply when you withdraw.

Is the Toptal no-cut policy the same as Toptal charging no fees at all?

No. Toptal's Talent FAQ says it takes no cut from the rate a freelancer sets. Clients pay Toptal separately, including a flat monthly subscription of US$79 described in its client FAQ. Payment to freelancers is in USD, so conversion to rupees still affects what reaches your Indian bank account.

Does the Contra Pro plan pay for itself compared with Contra platform fees?

It depends on how many payments you receive. Contra Pro costs US$29 a month or US$199 a year, per its pricing page. On the free plan, each payment carries a US$15 or US$29 platform fee. For example, two payments of US$500 or more in a month already equal the monthly Pro price.

Can an Indian freelancer lower the Upwork Freelancer Service Fee with Direct Contracts?

Upwork's fee agreement sets a flat 5% fee on Freelancer Initiated Direct Contracts with eligible clients you bring. Other contracts carry the variable Freelancer Service Fee, or 10% on Enterprise Client contracts. Clients on Client Initiated Direct Contracts pay a US$49 monthly Direct Contracts Fee for each active contract.

When can a Fiverr seller in India withdraw Earnings after an order is complete?

Fiverr's Payment Terms make Earnings available after a safety clearance period of 14 days from the order being marked complete. Top Rated Sellers wait 7 days. For Hourly Contracts the clearance period is 7 days after the Weekly Report is completed. Fiverr may also disable withdrawals in some cases.

Do FEMA export rules apply to Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal and Contra payouts?

Yes. Payments from foreign clients for your services are exports of services. Under the 2026 FEMA Regulations you file an EDF within 30 days from the end of the invoice month and realise the full value within nine months of the invoice date. Your AD bank monitors this. See what is EDF.

Which freelancing platform fee is easiest to predict before a project starts?

Fixed rules are easier to predict. Fiverr publishes a fixed 80% seller share, Toptal says it takes no cut, and Contra lists flat platform fees by payment size. Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee is variable, but the rate shown when a contract starts stays fixed for that contract, according to its fee agreement.
