What is the real ISK to INR rate you receive?

The real ISK to INR rate is the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. Bank TT buying rates, card rates and platform rates sit below it, and the gap is a cost to you. For example, at an example mid-market rate of ₹0.79 per krona, receiving ₹0.78 per krona on ISK 500,000 costs ₹5,000.

Today's rate, its history and every platform's payout are on the ISK to INR rate page.

How much INR do you receive on ISK 240,000, 610,000 and 1,200,000?

Can you hold ISK in India?

Yes, you can hold ISK in India in an EEFC account if your AD bank offers krona balances. Any person resident in India can open one under FEMA 10(R), and professionals can credit consultancy fees. Ask your bank whether it holds krona; if it does not, convert on receipt or invoice in EUR or USD.

  • Credits: Up to 100 percent of foreign exchange earnings received through the banking channel can go in, and card receipts reimbursed in foreign exchange count as banking channel receipts under Schedule I of FEMA 10(R).
  • Conversion: The Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts says a calendar month's accruals should be converted to rupees by the end of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Check how your AD bank applies this.
  • Currency: Banks choose which currencies they hold in EEFC accounts. Ask your AD bank whether it keeps ISK balances and how it handles a krona credit if ISK is not among its EEFC currencies.
  • Alternative: If your bank does not hold krona, agree to invoice Icelandic clients in EUR or USD. The payment still counts as convertible foreign exchange, and your EEFC account can hold the major currency.

When should you convert ISK to INR?

  • Spot: Convert krona at the rate on the day they arrive. It is simple, and you accept whatever rate the market gives that day.
  • Forward contract: Fix an ISK to INR rate today for a future date, where your bank quotes one. Under RBI's hedging directions, AD banks can offer forwards to retail users and allow hedging of contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent without first proving it, though a real exposure must exist. See forward contracts for exporters.
  • Limit order: Ask your bank or provider to convert automatically when ISK to INR reaches a rate you set. Availability for krona is limited, so confirm before relying on it.
  • Natural hedge: Pay krona costs, such as travel or services bought in Iceland, from EEFC balances so that part of your income is never converted. Payments outside India for permitted current account transactions are allowed debits under FEMA 10(R).

What documents and compliance apply to ISK receipts?

Receiving ISK for exports in India follows the same FEMA rules as any other currency. From 1 October 2026, service exporters file an EDF within 30 days of the end of the invoice month and realise proceeds within nine months under the FEMA 2026 Regulations. Your AD bank reports each receipt with a purpose code.

How did we verify this?

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian bank account receive an Icelandic MBK-Inst krona payment directly?

No. The Central Bank of Iceland interbank system moves krona between customers of financial institutions that take part in it, and Indian banks are not among them. An Icelandic client either pays local ISK account details held with a participating provider, which then pays you in India, or sends a SWIFT wire to your Indian bank.

What details does an Icelandic client need to send ISK to India by SWIFT wire?

The client needs your name as it appears on the bank account, your account number, your Indian bank's SWIFT code and branch address, and an invoice reference. Ask the client to choose the OUR charge option so that the client, rather than you, pays the sending and intermediary charges, and keep the payment advice for your records.

Does the Icelandic krona count as convertible foreign exchange for GST export of services?

Section 2(6) of the IGST Act requires payment in convertible foreign exchange but does not list currencies, so confirm with your tax adviser that an ISK receipt qualifies. The other conditions still apply: you are in India, the client and place of supply are outside India, and you are not establishments of one person.

How long can an ISK export invoice stay unpaid under FEMA rules?

Under the FEMA 2026 Regulations, proceeds of a services export invoiced in ISK must be realised within nine months of the invoice date. Invoices raised or settled in INR get twelve months. Your AD bank can extend the period if you give reasons for the delay and it accepts them.

Should an Indian exporter invoice an Icelandic client in ISK, EUR or INR?

All three are allowed for clients outside the Asian Clearing Union under the Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations. ISK suits the client, but check first whether your bank quotes krona. EUR or USD is easier to hold in an EEFC account. INR moves currency risk to the client and allows twelve months for realisation.

Where can an exporter check the official ISK exchange rate?

The Central Bank of Iceland lists krona reference rates, including against the Indian rupee, each business day at around 16:00, and the ECB publishes EUR to ISK and EUR to INR. Both say the rates are for information only. Your bank's conversion rate will differ.

Will the move of ISK payments to TIPS in 2028 let Icelandic clients pay Indian accounts instantly?

No. The Central Bank of Iceland agreed with the ECB in June 2026 that krona payments will settle instantly in TIPS from 2028. The bank says the change mainly affects domestic interbank payments in Iceland. A krona payment to an Indian bank account will still travel by SWIFT or through local ISK account details held for you.

Which purpose code applies to ISK receipts for consultancy work?

The purpose code follows the service, so the currency does not change it. Management consultancy is usually reported under P1006, which RBI describes as Business and management consultancy and public relations services. Software work is usually P0802, Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form). See P0802 vs P0807 and confirm with your AD bank.
