  • Ideal for: Freelancers who withdraw regularly and want the INR amount to be predictable from Contra's published fees.

How does SWIFT transfer in USD to an Indian bank work for Contra payouts?

Add a bank account on the Contra Wallet page and follow the prompts for a USD or SWIFT payout to your Indian bank account. Contra's payout list marks both SWIFT bank transfer and USD bank transfer as available for India.

  • Pros: Arrives as a foreign inward remittance your bank reports with a purpose code; Your own bank handles conversion; Suits larger withdrawals where a flat fee matters less
  • Cons: US $15 to $25 or more per payout; Contra publishes a range, so the exact fee appears only at withdrawal; Your bank's conversion rate and inward wire charges apply
  • Cost: US $15 to $25 or more per payout, per the Contra fees overview. Intermediary banks and your Indian bank may also deduct charges.
  • Time: Contra's payouts guide lists bank account payouts at 0 to 3 business days (Airwallex) or 2 to 5 (Stripe) with a faster payout, plus the 4 day clearance period on a standard payout. The Contra delayed payout guide says international bank payouts typically take 5 to 7 days and up to 10 to 14 business days.
  • FIRA: Your Indian bank receives a foreign currency wire and can usually issue an inward remittance certificate or advice. Check with your AD bank.
  • Ideal for: GST-registered service exporters who want the same documents their bank gives for any foreign wire.

How does PayPal work for Contra payouts?

Link a PayPal account in your own name from the Contra Wallet page and select it when you withdraw. PayPal then moves the money to your Indian bank as a separate step.

  • Pros: Faster payout arrives within 30 minutes; Familiar to many freelancers; Listed as available for India on Contra's payout list
  • Cons: 2% PayPal fee on the amount withdrawn; PayPal conversion rate is not shown on Contra's pages; Funds reach PayPal first, then your bank
  • Cost: 2% charged by PayPal when withdrawing from Contra to a linked PayPal account, per the Contra fees overview. PayPal may charge further fees to move money to your Indian bank.
  • Time: Within 30 minutes with a faster payout, or 4 business days with a standard payout, per the Contra payouts guide.
  • FIRA: Contra does not issue one. Ask PayPal what remittance record it provides when funds reach your Indian bank.
  • Ideal for: Freelancers who make small, occasional withdrawals and already use PayPal.

How does Payoneer work for Contra payouts?

Link a Payoneer account in your own name from the Contra Wallet page and select it when you withdraw. You then withdraw from Payoneer to your Indian bank through Payoneer.

  • Pros: Faster payout arrives within 30 minutes; Lets you combine Contra income with other earnings; Listed as available for India on Contra's payout list

  • Cost: $3 plus a 1 to 2% fee charged by Payoneer, per the Contra fees overview. Contra's linked country list shows 2% for India.
  • Time: Within 30 minutes with a faster payout, or 4 business days with a standard payout, per the Contra payouts guide.
  • FIRA: Contra does not issue one. Ask Payoneer what record it provides when you transfer the balance to your Indian bank.
  • Ideal for: Freelancers who already route several income streams through Payoneer.

How does Crypto payout (USDC) work for Contra payouts?

Add a crypto wallet as a payout method on the Contra Wallet page and withdraw your balance as USDC. Contra's payout list marks Crypto USDC as available for India.

  • Pros: Arrives within minutes in most cases; No currency conversion by Contra's processor
  • Cons: 2% fee on the Free plan; No Indian bank credit, purpose code or remittance record; Export receipts must follow the manner set by the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, so this route needs advice first
  • Cost: 2% of the payout on the Free plan or 1% on Contra Pro, per the Contra crypto payout fee article. The exact fee appears in the withdrawal summary.
  • Time: Typically minutes, up to a few hours depending on the blockchain, per the Contra delayed payout guide.
  • FIRA: None. A USDC payout does not reach an Indian bank, so there is no bank remittance record or purpose code.
  • Ideal for: Freelancers who have confirmed with their AD bank and tax advisor how a USDC receipt fits their export records.

How do you set up Contra withdrawals to India?

  1. Open the Contra Wallet page and select Add an account.
  2. Select India as the country that issued your ID. This must be the ID country, not the country where you live.
  3. Complete identity verification with Persona, entering your personal details, ID information and payment details.
  4. Provide the information Contra and its payment processors collect for Form W-8BEN, since you are based outside the US.
  5. Add your payout method: an Indian bank account for INR or USD, PayPal, Payoneer or a crypto wallet. The beneficiary name must match the name on your Contra Wallet exactly.
  6. Check that funds show as Available in your wallet, since escrow and pending ACH or SEPA funds cannot be withdrawn yet.
  7. Select Withdraw, choose a standard or faster payout, confirm your payout details and track the status in your wallet.

How much INR do you receive on $2,000, $5,000 and $10,000 from Contra?

Each row takes the withdrawal method's published fee and FX markup, at the mid-market rate of ₹94.61 for 4 Nov 2026. GST on fees is not included.

What fees does Contra charge before you withdraw?

Contra charges no commission, but the Free plan adds a platform fee of $15 on payments of $1 to $499 and $29 on $500 or more, per the Contra fees overview. Contra Pro waives it. Contra invoices carry a separate fee. For example, a $400 project where you cover the fee leaves $385 before other fees.

What tax forms and TDS apply to Contra earnings?

Contra collects W-8BEN information from independents based outside the US, working with its payment processors, per the Contra taxes and compliance article. Contra's help pages do not describe Indian TDS or GST TCS deductions. Indian freelancers report Contra income in their own Indian tax return and handle GST themselves.

  • W-8BEN: Independents outside the US are asked for the information required for a W-8BEN, and providing accurate details is the independent's responsibility, per the Contra taxes and compliance article. Contra says identity verification data is stored with Persona. See W-8BEN for Indian freelancers.
  • TDS: Contra's help pages do not mention deducting Indian TDS, so check your tax credit statements on the income tax e-filing portal rather than assuming any credit. The Income-tax Act, 2025 FAQs explain that the 2025 Act replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026.
  • GST on fees: Contra's pages do not state GST on its platform fee or Pro subscription. IGST Act section 5(3) lets the government notify services on which the recipient pays GST under reverse charge, so a GST-registered freelancer should check this with a tax advisor.
  • Export GST: Services that meet all five conditions in IGST Act section 2(6) are exports and are zero-rated under section 16. A registered freelancer files an LUT under CGST Rule 96A to export without paying IGST. See LUT filing.
  • Income tax: Contra income is taxed in India. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026, and the old section 44ADA presumptive scheme now sits in section 58. Section 44ADA still governs income of financial year 2025-26 and earlier. See section 44ADA for freelancers.
  • US 1099-K: Processors issue Form 1099-K only to eligible independents who meet IRS thresholds, per the Contra taxes and compliance article. Contra's page ties this to US reporting, and an Indian freelancer who submitted W-8BEN information should confirm with Contra whether any US form applies.

Do Contra payouts give you FIRA, and what purpose code applies?

  • FIRA term: FIRA is a term used by banks and platforms and is not defined in the FEMA regulations. Contra's help pages do not describe issuing a remittance certificate for any payout method. See FIRC vs FIRA vs e-BRC.
  • By method: A SWIFT payout in USD reaches your Indian bank as a foreign inward remittance, so your AD bank can usually issue a certificate or advice. For INR local transfers, PayPal and Payoneer, ask the provider or your bank what record comes with the credit. A USDC payout produces no bank record.
  • Purpose code: Pick the code that matches the work you delivered. Examples from the RBI purpose code list are P0802 "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)", P1007 "Advertising, trade fair service" and P1099 "Other services not included elsewhere". See purpose codes for marketplace payments.
  • EDF: Under Regulation 3 of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, in force from 1 October 2026, services exporters file an EDF within 30 days of the end of the invoice month. A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars from the same date. Realisation is due within nine months of the invoice date, per the 22 September 2026 amendment. See EDF form for exports.

Why do Contra withdrawals to India fail or get held?

  • Payout on hold: Contra may hold a payout for a routine fraud review and shows the message "Hang tight, we're reviewing your account." Contra aims to finish reviews in under 24 hours and emails you when funds are available, per the Contra payouts guide. No action is needed while the hold is in place.
  • Name mismatch: The name on your Contra Wallet must match the beneficiary name on your payout account exactly, per the Contra failed payouts article. Most failed payouts come from outdated or incorrect details, so correct the account and retry, or add a different payout method.
  • Business account: If you set up your wallet as an individual but want payouts sent to a business account, Contra's support team has to reset your wallet and onboard you as a business, per the Contra failed payouts article. Choose the right account type before your first payout.
  • ID mismatch: Verification fails when the ID document does not match the country you selected, the image is blurry or has glare, or the ID has expired, per the Contra identity troubleshooting guide. Use a valid Indian document photographed in good light.
  • Funds pending: Client payments by ACH take 3 to 5 business days to settle and SEPA takes 7 to 10, so these funds cannot be withdrawn until they settle, per the Contra payouts guide. Escrow funds release only after the client approves the deliverable.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Contra withdrawal take to reach an Indian bank account?

A Contra withdrawal by local bank transfer takes 0 to 3 business days as a faster payout or 4 to 7 business days as a standard payout. Standard payouts include a 4 day safety-clearance period. First international bank payouts can take 10 to 14 business days, and banks may take another 24 to 48 hours.

What does the Contra faster payout option cost?

The Contra faster payout option skips the 4 day safety-clearance period for a 2% fee on the Free plan. Contra Pro pages say Pro members get free faster payouts, while one Contra help article lists a 1% fee for Pro. Check the fee shown in your withdrawal summary before you confirm the payout.

Is there a daily limit on Contra payouts?

Contra applies a daily limit of $10,000 across all payouts. If you reach the Contra limit, Contra prompts you to withdraw again at the same time the next day. Freelancers with a larger balance can split the withdrawal over several days. Contra does not publish a minimum withdrawal amount on its help pages.

Does Contra take a commission from freelancers in India?

Contra takes no commission from freelancers in India or elsewhere. On the Free plan, Contra adds a platform fee of $15 for payments of $1 to $499 and $29 for $500 or more, which Contra Pro removes. Contra invoices carry a separate invoice fee of $2 to $29, halved on Pro. Client processing fees also apply.

What does Contra Pro cost for an Indian freelancer?

Contra Pro costs $29 per month with monthly billing or $199 per year with annual billing. The Contra Pro page lists no platform fees, no digital product fees, no faster payout fees and 50% off crypto payout fees. Freelancers can compare saved fees with the subscription cost. Contra lets members cancel at any time.

Who pays the Contra card processing fee, the client or the freelancer?

Either party can pay the Contra processing fee, since the freelancer chooses during project setup whether to cover processing and platform fees. Contra lists card processing at 2.9% plus 30 cents, plus 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is needed. ACH costs 0.8% capped at $5.

Can a US client pay a Contra freelancer by ACH or wire?

A US client can pay a Contra invoice by ACH if the client is approved for ACH access. Contra also offers US account and routing details inside the Contra Wallet, so clients can send ACH or wire payments directly. That Contra wallet feature is in beta with limited access, requested by emailing Contra.

Why is the Contra payout amount lower when it reaches India?

Contra holds balances in USD, so an INR payout is converted with a 0.40% processor fee plus a USD 1.25 transfer fee. PayPal, Payoneer and SWIFT payouts carry their own charges, and your Indian bank may deduct inward fees. A faster Contra payout adds a further percentage fee on the Free plan.
