Short answer
A settlement period is the time between a customer making a payment and the funds being credited to the merchant's account. RBI's Master Direction on Payment Aggregators leaves the exact timeline to the agreement and requires that agreement to state settlement timelines transparently. The period therefore differs between providers and routes.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not applicable | Agreement between merchant and provider; RBI Master Direction on Payment Aggregators for aggregator agreements | Freelancers and exporters planning cash flow from card and online payments | Payment aggregator and gateway agreements, bank transfers, payout schedules | Payment gateway, PA-CB, value date, chargeback, realisation |
What does Settlement period mean in simple words?
The settlement period starts when the customer pays and ends when the money lands in your account. In between, the payment may be authorised, captured, converted and sent through banks. Each step can add time, and weekends, bank holidays and checks can add more. RBI does not set one number of days for aggregator settlements. It expects the agreement between the aggregator and the merchant to state the timeline clearly. For an exporter, the settlement period also feeds into the realisation clock, because the export invoice is only realised once the money is received.
For example, a Chennai consultant invoices a client in Singapore for USD 2,000 on a card payment link. The client pays on a Friday. The agreement says funds are settled after processing and conversion, so the credit appears the following week. The consultant records the invoice date, payment date and credit date separately.
Why does Settlement period matter for Indian exporters and freelancers?
- Bank compliance: Export money must be realised within the period in Regulation 5 of the 2026 export regulations, and the AD bank may extend it. Slow settlement is rarely a problem for the limit alone, but track dates for each invoice.
- Cash flow: A slower settlement period delays when you can pay suppliers or taxes. Ask providers for the timeline in writing before you quote payment terms.
- Income tax: Advance tax and books follow the date money is received or the invoice is recognised under your accounting method. Ask a chartered accountant which date applies to you.
- GST: A delayed credit does not change the invoice date used for GST. For export refunds, see GST refund for export of services.
How does Settlement period work?
Settlement moves a payment through several stages, and the total time is the sum of them. Providers and banks publish or state these stages in their agreements.
- The customer pays, and the payment is authorised.
- The provider captures the payment and may hold it during checks or a dispute window.
- If the currency differs, it is converted at the rate in the agreement.
- The funds are paid out to the merchant's bank account.
- The bank credits the account and reports the receipt, which you match with the invoice.
How do you check the settlement period for an export payment?
Read the merchant agreement for the stated timeline, then compare it with the actual dates on your credits. Use the worked example below, which uses hypothetical dates.
- Find the settlement clause in the agreement and note the stated timeline.
- Record the date the customer paid, for example 3 March.
- Record the date your bank credited the account, for example 8 March.
- Count the days between them, which gives 5 days in this example.
- Compare with the agreed timeline, and raise a written query with the provider if the gap is longer.
- See PA-CB settlement timeline for how RBI treats aggregator settlements.
What is the difference between Settlement period and Value date?
A settlement period is a span of time, while a value date is the specific date from which a bank counts a credit or debit as effective. A single payment has both. Read the value date guide for the bank side.
| Term | Meaning | Where you see it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settlement period | Time from payment to funds in your account | Provider agreement and payout schedule | Planning cash flow |
| Value date | Date a bank treats a credit as effective | Bank statement and advice | Reconciling bank entries |
| Realisation period | Time limit to receive export proceeds | Export regulations | Checking compliance deadlines |
What do people get wrong about Settlement period?
- Fixed by RBI: RBI's Master Direction leaves the timeline to the agreement but requires that it be stated transparently. See PA-CB settlement timeline.
- Same as realisation: The settlement period is a payment processing time. The realisation period is the legal limit within which export money must be received.
- Same for all routes: Bank transfers, card payments and aggregator payouts follow different schedules.
- Same as value date: They are different concepts. See what is value date.
- Always the same length: Holidays, checks and disputes can lengthen a payout. Read the agreement for the circumstances.

FAQs about Settlement period
How long does an export payment take to settle through an aggregator?
There is no single period set by RBI. The merchant agreement states the timeline, and RBI's Master Direction requires it to be transparent. Check the agreement and your payout history, and ask the provider in writing if the actual time differs.
Does a long settlement period affect the 9 month realisation limit?
The limit in the 2026 export regulations runs separately, and the AD bank may extend it. A longer settlement period uses part of that time only if the payment is delayed that much. Track dates per invoice and talk to your bank early if you are near the limit.
Why does my bank credit arrive after the provider says it paid out?
The provider payout and the bank credit are separate steps. Banking days, intermediary banks and holidays can add time. Compare the provider payout date with your bank statement and ask the bank for the value date. Keep the provider statement and the bank advice together for each invoice.
Can settlement be held back by a dispute?
The agreement may allow the provider to hold or reverse funds during a dispute. See what a chargeback is for how card disputes work. Read the dispute and reserve clauses before you accept payments. Keep the provider statement and the bank advice together for each invoice.
Which settlement date should I use in my books?
Record the invoice date, the payment date and the credit date. Which date drives income recognition depends on your accounting method and tax rules. A chartered accountant can confirm the right date for your return. Keep the provider statement and the bank advice together for each invoice.
