Why does your bank give you less than the CHF to INR rate on Google?

A CHF to INR conversion carries a margin on top of the mid-market rate. If the client's bank first converts francs to US dollars, a second spread is added before your AD bank converts dollars to rupees. Receiving francs and converting once in India limits this to one spread. Ask your bank which rate it quotes.

Say a bank converts CHF 5,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹116.03. It credits about ₹5,71,431 instead of ₹5,80,134, a difference of ₹8,702 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.

Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.

What moves the CHF to INR rate?

The Swiss franc is not pegged, and its exchange rate is set in the market. The Swiss National Bank steers monetary conditions by setting the SNB policy rate, aiming for Swiss inflation below 2% a year. The SNB says it may buy or sell foreign currency against francs to fulfil its mandate, which can influence the franc's value.

  • Interest rates: The SNB reviews its policy rate at quarterly monetary policy assessments and can also act between them. Swiss rates are often lower than elsewhere, which the SNB explains as one reason for the franc's long-run strength.
  • Risk sentiment: The franc is known as a safe haven. The SNB notes that it gained sharply during the global financial crisis and the European debt crisis, when investors sought stability.
  • SNB intervention: The SNB may buy or sell foreign currency against francs to fulfil its monetary policy mandate. News from its policy assessments can move CHF.
  • Inflation gap: The SNB defines price stability as Swiss CPI inflation of less than 2% a year. When inflation abroad rose from mid-2021, the SNB let the franc appreciate to a certain degree to limit imported inflation.
  • RBI action: CHF/INR also moves with the rupee itself. Changes in USD/INR caused by Indian rates, inflation or RBI market operations feed directly into the cross rate.

When should exporters convert CHF to INR?

Many exporters convert CHF at spot on receipt or hold it briefly in an EEFC account. Forwards in CHF/INR are allowed through AD banks, but CHF is absent from the INR currency pairs traded on Indian exchanges, so ask your bank whether it quotes a direct CHF/INR forward. Limit orders depend on the bank.

  • Spot: Converts the francs on the day they arrive at your AD bank's card or negotiated rate. It is simple and suits regular, small invoices.
  • Forward: AD banks may offer deliverable forwards involving INR for hedging. A user may hedge contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent across banks without first proving it, and may cancel and rebook freely, under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings. Exchange-traded INR futures and options in India cover only USD, EUR, GBP and JPY against the rupee.
  • Limit order: Some AD banks will convert when CHF/INR reaches a target you set. Availability and minimum amounts vary by bank, so confirm before relying on it.
  • EEFC holding: An EEFC account can hold up to 100 percent of export earnings in foreign currency and pays no interest. Each calendar month's credits must be converted to rupees by the last day of the next month, after approved uses or forward commitments, under para 3.1 of RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts.

How do you get the best CHF to INR rate?

  • Invoice in CHF: Billing a Swiss client in francs avoids a conversion at the client's bank, so only one spread applies in India.
  • Compare quotes: Check the CHF/INR rate your AD bank applied against the mid-market rate shown on this page on the same date.
  • Ask about charges: SWIFT transfers can carry sender, intermediary and receiving bank charges. Agree with the client who pays which charges, and put it in the contract.
  • Batch payments: Bank margins are often tiered by amount. Receiving fewer, larger payments may get a narrower margin than many small ones.
  • Watch SNB dates: The SNB holds quarterly policy assessments. Large CHF moves can follow these decisions, so avoid converting big amounts just before one unless you have hedged.

How do we source and check these rates?

  • Feed: XE live mid-market rates, published live; this site refreshes it every 15 minutes. The page refreshes at most hourly.
  • Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
  • Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
  • Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the CHF to INR rate rise when global markets fall?

The Swiss franc is widely treated as a safe haven. The Swiss National Bank says the franc gained significantly during periods of high global uncertainty such as the financial crisis. When investors move money into francs, CHF tends to strengthen against riskier currencies, which can lift CHF/INR at the same time.

Can an Indian freelancer hold CHF in an EEFC account instead of converting to INR?

Yes, if your AD bank offers an EEFC account in Swiss francs. Up to 100 percent of foreign exchange earnings can be credited, under RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts. The account pays no interest. Each month's credits must be converted to rupees by the end of the following month, after approved uses.

Can an exporter book a forward contract to sell CHF for INR in India?

Yes. AD banks may offer deliverable foreign exchange forwards involving INR for hedging, under the RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings. Contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent can be hedged without first proving it. Pricing for CHF/INR forwards depends on your bank.

Does the Swiss National Bank fix the CHF to INR exchange rate?

No. The franc floats, and CHF/INR is set in the market. The Swiss National Bank may buy or sell foreign currency against francs to meet its price stability mandate. Such interventions can influence the franc's value. The SNB sets no target rate against the rupee.

How long can a Swiss client take to pay an Indian exporter in CHF under RBI rules?

The full export value of services must be realised and repatriated within nine months from the invoice date, under Regulation 5(1) of the FEMA export regulations 2026. This applies to invoices in a foreign currency; INR invoices get twelve months. Your AD bank may extend the period on request if it accepts your reasons, so speak to it early.

Which interest rate should CHF to INR watchers follow?

Follow the SNB policy rate, which the Swiss National Bank uses to keep short-term Swiss franc money market rates close to its target. Also follow RBI policy decisions on the Indian side. The gap between the two affects how attractive each currency is to investors.
