FEMA allows receipts from non-ACU countries such as Georgia in rupees or any foreign currency under Regulation 3(2)(I)(a)(iii). Your AD bank may not handle lari credits, so check with it before invoicing in GEL.
How has the GEL to INR rate moved?
A rate history is not shown for GEL because the European Central Bank does not publish a GEL reference rate, and this page does not mix sources in one chart. The Georgian lari floats. The National Bank of Georgia says Georgia has a floating exchange rate regime. The official GEL-USD rate is the weighted average of spot trades on the Bloomberg Bmatch platform. Rates against other currencies, including the rupee, are derived from cross-currency rates. The bank intervenes only for set purposes.

Why does your bank give you less than the GEL to INR rate on Google?
There is no deep direct GEL-INR market. Even the National Bank of Georgia derives lari rates against currencies other than the dollar from cross rates. A bank converting lari usually goes through USD, applying one spread on GEL-USD and another on USD-INR. SWIFT intermediary charges can reduce the amount further.
Say a bank converts GEL 5,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹36.54. It credits about ₹1,79,951 instead of ₹1,82,691, a difference of ₹2,740 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.
Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.
What moves the GEL to INR rate?
The Georgian lari floats. The National Bank of Georgia says Georgia has a floating exchange rate regime. The official GEL-USD rate is the weighted average of spot trades on the Bloomberg Bmatch platform. Rates against other currencies, including the rupee, are derived from cross-currency rates. The bank intervenes only for set purposes.
- Interest rates: The National Bank of Georgia uses the monetary policy rate, also called the refinancing rate, as its key instrument under inflation targeting. It notes the rate also works through the exchange rate channel.
- Interventions: The NBG says interventions are not a major instrument, but it uses them to maintain reserve adequacy, offset short-term swings from capital flows and support price stability.
- Capital flows: The NBG describes Georgia as a small and open economy with free capital mobility, so inflows and outflows move the lari.
- RBI action: On the rupee side, the USD-INR rate and RBI intervention move the GEL-INR cross even when the lari is steady against the dollar.
- Risk sentiment: Smaller currencies such as the lari tend to weaken when global investors move away from risk, as capital leaves smaller markets.
When should exporters convert GEL to INR?
For GEL to INR, spot conversion is the main option, because lari forwards against the rupee are hard to find in India. Spot converts on the day of credit. A limit order waits for a target rate. An EEFC account can hold receipts briefly. Invoicing in USD or EUR allows a rupee hedge on a major pair.
- Spot: Converts the receipt at the bank's rate on the day it is credited. A USD or EUR receipt is converted at the bank's rate for that currency.
- Forward: RBI's Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings lets AD banks offer forward contracts to hedge a contracted or anticipated exposure. The contract's amount and tenor cannot exceed those of the exposure. Exchange-traded rupee pairs under paragraph 3.2 do not include GEL, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes a GEL-INR forward at all.
- Limit order: Some banks and providers let you set a target rate and convert automatically. Check whether the facility covers GEL, since many cover only major currencies.
- EEFC holding: You can credit up to 100% of export earnings to an EEFC account and convert later. RBI requires each month's accruals to be converted to rupees by the last day of the following month, after approved uses or forward commitments. Check whether your AD bank holds balances in Georgian lari.
How do you get the best GEL to INR rate?
- Invoice currency: Agree with the Georgian buyer whether to invoice in USD or EUR. Both have deep markets against the rupee, which keeps spreads narrower.
- Compare margin: Compare the rate offered with the NBG official rate and the USD-INR mid-market rate on the same day to see the full spread.
- Charges: Ask the buyer to pay SWIFT charges under the OUR option, so intermediary fees are not deducted from your amount.
- Batch: Fewer, larger transfers mean fewer fixed fees per rupee received. Agree a billing cycle that suits both sides.
- Ask your bank: Ask your AD bank in writing whether it accepts GEL credits and which margin applies on each leg of the conversion.

How do we source and check these rates?
- Feed: ExchangeRate-API open access feed, published once a day. The page refreshes at most hourly.
- Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
- Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
- Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions
How is the official GEL exchange rate set before converting to INR?
The National Bank of Georgia calculates the official GEL-USD rate as the weighted average of spot trades on the Bloomberg Bmatch platform. It derives rates against other currencies from cross rates. The GEL to INR figure is therefore a cross rate built from lari and rupee rates against the US dollar.
Can an Indian freelancer get paid in GEL by a client in Georgia?
FEMA allows receipts from non-ACU countries, including Georgia, in rupees or any foreign currency under Regulation 3(2)(I)(a)(iii). Whether a lari payment can be credited depends on your AD bank. Invoicing in US dollars or euros avoids that question, since both are standard for Indian banks.
Does the National Bank of Georgia intervene in the GEL exchange rate?
Only for set purposes. The National Bank of Georgia says interventions are not a major instrument under its floating regime. It uses them to maintain reserve adequacy, offset short-term swings from capital flows, balance government FX operations and support price stability. GEL to INR still moves mainly with market demand.
Can I book a GEL to INR forward contract in India?
RBI rules let AD banks offer rupee forwards to hedge a real export exposure under the Master Direction on Risk Management. GEL is not an exchange-traded rupee pair, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes a lari forward against the rupee. Invoicing in USD or EUR and hedging that pair is more practical.
What interest rate affects the GEL to INR exchange rate?
On Georgia's side, the National Bank of Georgia monetary policy rate, also called the refinancing rate, is the key instrument. It affects the lari through the exchange rate channel. On India's side, RBI's repo rate and the USD-INR rate matter. The difference shapes capital flows between the two.
Can GEL receipts be kept in an EEFC account in India?
An EEFC account holds export earnings in foreign currency, without interest, under para 3.1 of the RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts. A month's credits must be converted by the end of the next month unless used for approved purposes. Ask your AD bank whether it maintains balances in Georgian lari.
