Indonesian clients can pay Indian exporters by SWIFT transfer, often in US dollars. In March 2024 RBI and Bank Indonesia signed an MoU to promote INR and IDR for bilateral transactions. Indonesia is outside the Asian Clearing Union, so RBI rules allow receipt in any foreign currency. Ask your AD bank whether it credits IDR.

How much INR do you get on IDR 36,000,000, 91,000,000 and 180,000,000?

Each row applies the platform's published fee, FX markup and 18% GST on the fee to the mid-market rate of ₹0.005224 for 3 Nov 2026.

Why does your bank give you less than the IDR to INR rate on Google?

IDR/INR is thinly traded, so banks may price it through the US dollar, combining two margins. Bank Indonesia publishes an INR/IDR reference rate to help set rates for non-USD derivative settlement. RBI's risk management directions list no IDR-INR exchange-traded contracts, which limits hedging and price comparison.

Say a bank converts IDR 91,000,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹0.005224. It credits about ₹4,68,271 instead of ₹4,75,402, a difference of ₹7,131 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.

Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.

What moves the IDR to INR rate?

The Indonesian rupiah trades in the market, while Bank Indonesia is mandated to keep it stable. Under its Flexible Inflation Targeting Framework, Bank Indonesia combines its policy rate with exchange rate and capital flow policies. It publishes the JISDOR USD/IDR reference rate daily from actual interbank spot trades.

  • Interest rates: Bank Indonesia's policy rate is the BI-Rate, renamed from the BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate on 21 December 2023. Changes relative to RBI's repo rate shift the rate gap behind IDR/INR.
  • Central bank action: Bank Indonesia's policy mix includes exchange rate and capital flow instruments. It can act in the market when the rupiah moves sharply.
  • Capital flows: Foreign investment in Indonesian bonds and shares brings dollars in and out. Sudden outflows weaken the rupiah faster than trade flows alone.
  • Trade balance: Indonesia's export earnings bring dollars into the country. Changes in global prices and demand for its exports shift those inflows and the rupiah's value.
  • USD/INR: Because IDR/INR is often built from USD/IDR and USD/INR, a move in the rupee against the dollar can feed straight into IDR/INR.

When should exporters convert IDR to INR?

Indian exporters receiving IDR can convert at spot, request a bank forward, set a target-rate order or hold rupiah in an EEFC account if their bank offers one. Spot is the common choice because few AD banks may quote IDR/INR forwards. Invoicing in USD and hedging USD/INR is an alternative where an IDR forward is unavailable.

  • Spot: Your AD bank converts the rupiah at its current rate when the payment is credited. Most IDR receipts are handled this way.
  • Forward: RBI's Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings lets AD banks offer forwards involving INR to retail users for hedging. Users can hedge contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent across all AD banks without establishing the underlying, though a valid unhedged exposure must exist, and may freely cancel and rebook. IDR/INR forwards may not be quoted by every AD bank; check with your AD bank, or invoice in USD and hedge USD/INR.
  • Limit order: Some AD banks accept an order to convert at a target rate. Check with your AD bank whether it covers IDR.
  • EEFC holding: RBI's Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts lets you credit 100% of foreign exchange earnings to an EEFC account. The account pays no interest. Each month's accruals must be converted to rupees by the end of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Check with your AD bank whether it offers rupiah EEFC accounts.

How do you get the best IDR to INR rate?

  • Invoice currency: Indonesian payers can often send US dollars. A USD invoice avoids an IDR/INR cross conversion on your side.
  • Compare mid-market: Check your AD bank's IDR/INR rate against the live mid-market rate on this page at conversion. The gap is the bank's margin.
  • Ask about INR: Ask your AD bank whether it settles trade with Indonesia in INR under RBI's INR trade settlement framework. If it does, your client can pay in rupees and you avoid a conversion on your side.
  • Reference rate: Bank Indonesia's daily INR/IDR reference rate gives an official benchmark to compare with your bank's quote.

How do we source and check these rates?

  • Feed: European Central Bank reference rates (via frankfurter.dev), published once per ECB working day, around 16:00 CET. The page refreshes at most hourly.
  • Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
  • Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
  • Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indonesian client pay an Indian exporter in INR instead of IDR?

Possibly. RBI and Bank Indonesia signed an MoU in March 2024 to promote INR and IDR use for bilateral transactions. RBI's 2022 circular also sets out how AD banks can invoice and settle exports in INR through Special Rupee Vostro Accounts. Ask your AD bank whether it offers rupee settlement with Indonesian banks.

What is JISDOR and how does it relate to the IDR to INR rate?

JISDOR is Bank Indonesia's USD/IDR reference rate, calculated from actual interbank spot trades between 09:00 and 15:00 Jakarta time. It is a dollar rate. Banks may combine USD/IDR with USD/INR to reach IDR/INR, so JISDOR can be one input into the rupee rate you receive.

Why do banks quote IDR to INR per 1,000 rupiah?

One rupiah is worth a very small fraction of a rupee, so a single-unit rate has many decimal places. Banks and rate sites often quote INR per 100 or 1,000 IDR. Check the unit before comparing two quotes, since a unit mismatch can look like a large rate difference.

Can an Indian exporter hedge IDR receivables against INR?

Only through a bank forward, if your AD bank quotes one. RBI's risk management directions allow forwards for hedging contracted exposure, but list no IDR-INR exchange-traded contracts. Many exporters invoice in USD and hedge USD/INR, which has a deeper market.

Can an Indian freelancer keep IDR in an EEFC account before converting to INR?

Only if your AD bank offers rupiah accounts, and not all do. RBI's Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts allows 100% of foreign exchange earnings in EEFC. The account pays no interest, and each month's accruals must be converted by the end of the next month.

Does an IDR payment into India need a purpose code for INR credit?

Yes. Your AD bank asks for a purpose code for each inward foreign exchange remittance, including rupiah. The code, taken from the RBI purpose code list, describes the service exported, such as software or consulting. Giving the right code helps the bank credit the INR and report the export receipt correctly.
