Payments from Kenya to Indian exporters usually arrive by SWIFT. FEMA lets receipts from non-ACU countries such as Kenya be in rupees or any foreign currency under Regulation 3(2)(I)(a)(iii). If the buyer pays in US dollars, the KES rate changes the buyer's cost and your rupee credit follows USD-INR. Ask your AD bank whether it accepts shilling credits.
How has the KES to INR rate moved?
A rate history is not shown for KES because the European Central Bank does not publish a KES reference rate, and this page does not mix sources in one chart. The Kenyan shilling floats. The Central Bank of Kenya says it does not set the exchange rate, which is market determined by supply and demand. Its published rate is the weighted average of registered interbank spot trades each day. Banks and forex bureaus set their own buying and selling rates around it.

Why does your bank give you less than the KES to INR rate on Google?
A shilling payment is rarely converted straight into rupees, because direct KES-INR trading is thin. The bank usually prices the pair through the US dollar, so one spread applies on KES-USD and another on USD-INR. Correspondent charges on the SWIFT route can reduce the amount further before conversion. The combined margin can be wider than on major currencies.
Say a bank converts KES 650,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹0.7287. It credits about ₹4,66,519 instead of ₹4,73,623, a difference of ₹7,104 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.
Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.
What moves the KES to INR rate?
The Kenyan shilling floats. The Central Bank of Kenya says it does not set the exchange rate, which is market determined by supply and demand. Its published rate is the weighted average of registered interbank spot trades each day. Banks and forex bureaus set their own buying and selling rates around it.
- Interest rates: The Central Bank of Kenya Monetary Policy Committee reviews the Central Bank Rate (CBR) at least every two months. A higher CBR tends to support the shilling by raising returns on shilling assets.
- Trade balance: The Central Bank of Kenya notes that Kenya is a net importer of goods, so steady demand for dollars to pay for imports can weigh on the shilling.
- Oil prices: The Central Bank of Kenya lists oil prices among the international factors that change inflation, and a larger fuel import bill raises demand for foreign currency.
- RBI action: On the rupee side, RBI intervention and the USD-INR rate move the KES-INR cross even on days when the shilling is flat against the dollar.
- Risk sentiment: Frontier market currencies such as the shilling tend to weaken when global investors cut risk, as portfolio money leaves smaller markets first.
When should exporters convert KES to INR?
The timing of a KES to INR conversion depends mostly on spot, because shilling forwards against the rupee are hard to find in India. Spot converts at the day's rate. A limit order waits for a target rate. An EEFC account can hold receipts briefly. Invoicing in USD allows a hedge on the USD-INR pair instead.
- Spot: Converts the shilling or dollar receipt at the bank's rate on the day it is credited. It is the default for most Kenyan payments.
- Forward: RBI's Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings lets AD banks offer forward contracts to hedge a contracted or anticipated exposure. The contract's amount and tenor cannot exceed those of the exposure. Exchange-traded rupee pairs under paragraph 3.2 do not include KES, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes a KES-INR forward at all.
- Limit order: Some banks and providers let you set a target rate and convert automatically when it is reached. Check whether the facility covers KES, since many cover only major currencies.
- EEFC holding: You can credit up to 100% of export earnings to an EEFC account and convert later. RBI requires each month's accruals to be converted to rupees by the last day of the following month, after approved uses or forward commitments. Check whether your AD bank holds balances in Kenyan shillings.
How do you get the best KES to INR rate?
- Invoice currency: Agree with the Kenyan buyer whether to invoice in KES or USD. A USD invoice avoids the KES-USD leg on your side, though the buyer then bears it.
- Compare margin: Compare the rate you are offered with the Central Bank of Kenya published rate and the USD-INR mid-market rate on the same day to see the full spread.
- Charges: Ask the buyer to use the SWIFT OUR option if possible, so intermediary bank fees are not deducted from your amount.
- Batch: Fewer, larger transfers usually mean fewer fixed fees per rupee received. Agree a billing cycle that suits both sides.
- Ask your bank: Ask your AD bank in writing whether it credits KES directly or converts through USD, and what margin applies to each leg.

How do we source and check these rates?
- Feed: XE live mid-market rates, published live; this site refreshes it every 15 minutes. The page refreshes at most hourly.
- Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
- Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
- Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions
Is the KES to INR rate set by the Central Bank of Kenya?
No. The Central Bank of Kenya says it does not set the exchange rate, which is market determined. It publishes a daily rate calculated as the weighted average of interbank spot trades. The KES to INR figure is a cross rate built from shilling and rupee rates against the US dollar.
Can an Indian freelancer receive payment in KES from a client in Kenya?
FEMA allows receipts from countries outside the ACU in rupees or any foreign currency under Regulation 3(2)(I)(a)(iii), and Kenya is not an ACU member. Whether a shilling payment can actually be credited depends on your AD bank. Invoicing in US dollars avoids that question, since USD credits are standard for Indian banks.
Why is my KES to INR bank rate lower than the rate shown on Google?
The figure shown online is usually a mid-market rate with no margin. Your bank's rate includes its spread, and for shillings it often adds two spreads, one on KES-USD and one on USD-INR. Intermediary charges on the SWIFT payment can lower the rupee amount further. Ask your bank for a breakdown.
Can I book a KES to INR forward contract in India?
RBI rules let AD banks offer rupee forwards to hedge a real export exposure under the Master Direction on Risk Management. KES is not among the exchange-traded rupee pairs, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes a shilling forward against the rupee. If your invoice is in USD, a USD-INR forward is the usual hedge.
What moves the KES to INR exchange rate?
The KES to INR rate moves with the shilling's value against the US dollar and the rupee's value against the dollar. On the Kenyan side, the Central Bank Rate, import demand and oil prices matter, as the Central Bank of Kenya explains. On the Indian side, the USD-INR rate and RBI actions matter.
Can I keep KES receipts in an EEFC account before converting to INR?
An EEFC account can hold export earnings in foreign currency, without interest, under para 3.1 of the RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts. A month's credits must be converted by the end of the next month unless used for approved purposes. Ask your AD bank whether it keeps balances in Kenyan shillings.
