Sri Lanka is an ACU member, but RBI's July 2022 circular lets trade with Sri Lanka be settled in any permitted currency outside the ACU mechanism until further notice. So Sri Lankan buyers can pay by SWIFT in US dollars or another currency, or through ACU. Ask your AD bank which route it supports.

How has the LKR to INR rate moved?

A rate history is not shown for LKR because the European Central Bank does not publish a LKR reference rate, and this page does not mix sources in one chart. The Sri Lankan rupee follows a flexible exchange rate regime. Under the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act, the CBSL Monetary Policy Board formulates monetary policy and implements a flexible exchange rate regime in line with its flexible inflation targeting framework. Under this regime the rupee moves with market conditions, and the main policy tool is the Overnight Policy Rate.

How much INR do you get on LKR 660,000, 1,700,000 and 3,300,000?

Each row applies the platform's published fee, FX markup and 18% GST on the fee to the mid-market rate of ₹0.2853 for 4 Nov 2026.

Why does your bank give you less than the LKR to INR rate on Google?

Direct LKR-INR trading is thin, so a bank converting Sri Lankan rupees usually goes through the US dollar. One spread applies on LKR-USD and another on USD-INR. If the buyer pays in US dollars, only the USD-INR margin applies on your side. SWIFT intermediary charges can reduce the amount further.

Say a bank converts LKR 1,700,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹0.2853. It credits about ₹4,77,673 instead of ₹4,84,947, a difference of ₹7,274 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.

Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.

What moves the LKR to INR rate?

The Sri Lankan rupee follows a flexible exchange rate regime. Under the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act, the CBSL Monetary Policy Board formulates monetary policy and implements a flexible exchange rate regime in line with its flexible inflation targeting framework. Under this regime the rupee moves with market conditions, and the main policy tool is the Overnight Policy Rate.

  • Interest rates: The Central Bank of Sri Lanka uses the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) as its single policy rate since 27 November 2024. Changes in the OPR signal the policy stance and affect demand for rupee assets.
  • Inflation target: The CBSL works under a flexible inflation targeting framework, with the exchange rate allowed to adjust alongside it.
  • RBI action: On the Indian side, the USD-INR rate and RBI intervention move the LKR-INR cross even when the Sri Lankan rupee is steady against the dollar.
  • Risk sentiment: Smaller currencies such as the Sri Lankan rupee tend to weaken when global investors move away from risk.

When should exporters convert LKR to INR?

For LKR to INR, timing mostly depends on USD-INR, when Sri Lankan buyers pay in US dollars. Spot converts on the day of credit. A USD-INR forward can fix the rupee value of a dollar invoice. A limit order waits for a target rate. An EEFC account can hold the dollars briefly.

  • Spot: Converts the dollar or LKR receipt at the bank's rate on the day it is credited.
  • Forward: RBI's Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings lets AD banks offer forward contracts to hedge a contracted or anticipated exposure. The contract's amount and tenor cannot exceed those of the exposure. Exchange-traded rupee pairs under paragraph 3.2 do not include LKR, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes a LKR-INR forward at all. For dollar invoices, a USD-INR forward is the relevant hedge.
  • Limit order: Some banks and providers let you set a target rate and convert automatically. Check whether the facility covers LKR or only USD.
  • EEFC holding: You can credit up to 100% of export earnings to an EEFC account and convert later. RBI requires each month's accruals to be converted to rupees by the last day of the following month, after approved uses or forward commitments. Check whether your AD bank holds balances in Sri Lankan rupees.

How do you get the best LKR to INR rate?

  • Invoice currency: Invoice in US dollars where the buyer agrees. That moves the LKR conversion to the buyer's side and leaves one USD-INR leg for you.
  • Pick the route: Ask your AD bank whether it receives Sri Lankan payments through ACU or by SWIFT under the 2022 RBI circular, and compare charges.
  • Compare margin: Compare the rate offered with the USD-INR mid-market rate on the day of credit to see the bank's spread.
  • Charges: Ask the buyer to pay SWIFT charges under the OUR option, so intermediary fees are not deducted from your amount.
  • Hedge early: For large or recurring dollar invoices, a USD-INR forward booked against the invoice fixes the rupee value before payment arrives.

How do we source and check these rates?

  • Feed: ExchangeRate-API open access feed, published once a day. The page refreshes at most hourly.
  • Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
  • Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
  • Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Must LKR payments from Sri Lanka to India go through the ACU?

No. Sri Lanka is an ACU member, but RBI's 8 July 2022 circular allows trade with Sri Lanka to be settled in any permitted currency outside the ACU mechanism until further notice. So a Sri Lankan buyer can pay by SWIFT in US dollars or another currency, or use ACU if both banks support it.

How is the LKR exchange rate set before converting to INR?

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka runs a flexible exchange rate regime alongside flexible inflation targeting. Its main policy tool is the Overnight Policy Rate. The LKR to INR figure is a cross rate built from the Sri Lankan rupee and Indian rupee rates against the US dollar.

What is the CBSL policy rate that affects LKR to INR?

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka's policy rate is the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR), used under a single policy interest rate mechanism since 27 November 2024. OPR changes affect interest rates on Sri Lankan rupee assets and capital flows. On India's side, RBI's repo rate and the USD-INR rate matter.

Can I book an LKR to INR forward contract in India?

RBI rules let AD banks offer rupee forwards to hedge real export exposure under the Master Direction on Risk Management. LKR is not an exchange-traded rupee pair, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes a Sri Lankan rupee forward against INR. For dollar invoices, a USD-INR forward is the practical hedge.

Why is my LKR to INR bank rate lower than the mid-market rate?

The mid-market rate has no margin. A bank converting Sri Lankan rupees usually goes through the US dollar and adds a spread on each leg. Intermediary charges on a SWIFT payment can lower the amount further. Invoicing in US dollars removes the LKR leg from your side.

Can LKR receipts be held in an EEFC account before INR conversion?

An EEFC account holds export earnings in foreign currency, without interest, under para 3.1 of the RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts. A month's credits must be converted by the end of the next month unless used for approved purposes. Ask your AD bank whether it holds Sri Lankan rupee balances.
