Why does your bank give you less than the PLN to INR rate on Google?

PLN/INR is a thinly traded pair, so banks often build the rate from PLN against USD or EUR and USD/INR. Each leg carries a margin. If the client converts zlotys to dollars before sending and your bank converts dollars to rupees, you pay two spreads. Ask your bank which currency gives the narrower total.

Say a bank converts PLN 5,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹24.12. It credits about ₹1,18,808 instead of ₹1,20,618, a difference of ₹1,809 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.

Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.

What moves the PLN to INR rate?

The Polish zloty floats. The ECB Convergence Report of June 2026 states that Narodowy Bank Polski operates a floating exchange rate regime and has had an inflation-targeting framework since 1998, with a medium-term target of 2.5 percent, plus or minus 1 point, since 2004. The zloty does not take part in ERM II.

  • Interest rates: Narodowy Bank Polski sets its reference rate. The ECB Convergence Report notes it started easing in May 2025 and had cut its key rate by 2.0 points by March 2026.
  • Risk sentiment: The ECB report records depreciation pressure on the zloty in March 2026, amid heightened risk aversion in global currency markets after the escalation of the war in the Middle East.
  • Energy prices: The ECB report links Polish inflation partly to the relatively large share of energy in the consumption basket, so energy shocks can shift rate expectations and the zloty.
  • Euro area: The ECB report notes the zloty depreciated in April 2025 partly as the euro strengthened, and that short-term rate differentials against EURIBOR stayed relatively wide. EUR/PLN moves carry through to PLN/INR.
  • RBI action: The rupee side of PLN/INR moves with USD/INR. Indian rates, inflation and RBI market operations shape that side.

When should exporters convert PLN to INR?

Many exporters convert PLN at spot on receipt, or ask clients to pay in EUR or USD instead. Forwards involving INR are permitted for hedging, but PLN is not among the INR pairs traded on Indian exchanges and direct PLN/INR forward quotes may be limited. Holding PLN in EEFC depends on your bank.

  • Spot: Converts the payment when it arrives, at your AD bank's rate. Compare the PLN quote with the EUR or USD route before agreeing the invoice currency.
  • Forward: AD banks may offer deliverable forwards involving INR for hedging. A user may hedge contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent across banks without first proving it, and may cancel and rebook freely, under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings. Exchange-traded INR contracts in India cover only USD, EUR, GBP and JPY.
  • Limit order: Some AD banks accept a target rate for conversion. Availability for PLN is less common, so confirm with your bank.
  • EEFC holding: An EEFC account can hold up to 100 percent of export earnings in foreign currency and pays no interest. Each calendar month's credits must be converted to rupees by the last day of the next month, after approved uses or forward commitments, under para 3.1 of RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts.

How do you get the best PLN to INR rate?

  • Choose currency: Ask your AD bank for its PLN/INR, EUR/INR and USD/INR margins, then agree with the client on the invoice currency with the narrowest total margin.
  • Compare quotes: Check the rate your bank applied against the mid-market rate shown on this page for the same date.
  • Ask about charges: Agree in the contract who pays SWIFT sender, intermediary and receiving charges.
  • Batch payments: Margins on thinly traded currencies are often wider on small amounts. Fewer, larger transfers can help.

How do we source and check these rates?

  • Feed: XE live mid-market rates, published live; this site refreshes it every 15 minutes. The page refreshes at most hourly.
  • Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
  • Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
  • Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Polish zloty a floating currency against INR?

Yes. The ECB Convergence Report of June 2026 says Narodowy Bank Polski operates a floating exchange rate regime, and the zloty did not take part in ERM II. PLN/INR is therefore set by the market through PLN rates against major currencies and the rupee's own rate.

Should an Indian exporter invoice a Polish client in PLN or EUR?

It depends on the margins your AD bank charges. PLN/INR is a thinly traded pair, so many banks quote it through USD or EUR. Ask your bank for its PLN/INR and EUR/INR rates on the same day, compare them with the mid-market rate, then agree the currency with the client.

Can an Indian freelancer hold PLN in an EEFC account?

Only if your AD bank offers an EEFC account in Polish zlotys. Where offered, up to 100 percent of foreign exchange earnings can be credited, under RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts. The account pays no interest, and each month's credits must be converted to rupees by the end of the following month.

Can an exporter hedge a PLN receivable against INR with a forward?

Yes, in principle. AD banks may offer deliverable forwards involving INR for hedging, under the RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings. Contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent can be hedged without first proving it. Few banks may quote PLN/INR directly, so ask early.

What is Narodowy Bank Polski's inflation target that affects PLN?

The ECB Convergence Report of June 2026 says the Polish medium-term inflation target has been 2.5 percent, plus or minus 1 percentage point, since 2004. When inflation runs away from that target, expectations for the NBP reference rate change, and that can move the zloty against the rupee.

How long can a Polish client take to pay an Indian exporter in PLN under RBI rules?

Payment for services must be realised and repatriated within nine months from the invoice date, under Regulation 5(1) of the FEMA export regulations 2026. This applies to invoices in a foreign currency; INR invoices get twelve months. Your AD bank may extend the period on request if it accepts your reasons, so raise delays early.
