Why does your bank give you less than the SEK to INR rate on Google?

A SEK to INR conversion includes your bank's margin over the mid-market rate. The krona is less widely traded against the rupee than the dollar or euro, so a bank may price it through USD, and a client converting kronor before sending adds a second spread. Receiving kronor and converting once limits this.

Say a bank converts SEK 49,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹9.725. It credits about ₹4,69,367 instead of ₹4,76,515, a difference of ₹7,148 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.

Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.

What moves the SEK to INR rate?

The Swedish krona floats. Sweden abandoned its fixed exchange rate on 19 November 1992 and has kept a floating rate since, according to Sveriges Riksbank. The Riksbank targets CPIF inflation of around 2 percent a year using its policy rate. Sweden does not take part in ERM II.

  • Interest rates: The Riksbank policy rate is its main monetary policy tool. The Riksbank notes that if its policy deviates substantially from other countries', this could have a considerable effect on the krona.
  • Global growth: The Riksbank describes Sweden as a small, open economy where foreign demand for Swedish exports affects inflation. Changes in the global outlook can shift expectations for Swedish rates and the krona.
  • Risk sentiment: The ECB Convergence Report of June 2026 found the krona showed a high degree of volatility against the euro over the two years to June 2026. Swings in investor sentiment feed into SEK/INR.
  • Inflation: The Riksbank targets CPIF inflation of around 2 per cent. Inflation surprises change expectations for the policy rate and move the krona.
  • RBI action: SEK/INR also moves with the rupee. Indian rates, inflation and RBI market operations shape the INR side of the rate.

When should exporters convert SEK to INR?

Many exporters convert SEK at spot on receipt or hold it in an EEFC account for a short period. Forwards in SEK/INR are permitted through AD banks, though SEK is absent from the INR pairs traded on Indian exchanges and bank pricing may be thin. A limit order can help capture a target rate.

  • Spot: Converts the kronor when they arrive, at your AD bank's rate. It suits regular invoices and needs no extra setup.
  • Forward: AD banks may offer deliverable forwards involving INR for hedging. A user may hedge contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent across banks without first proving it, and may cancel and rebook freely, under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings. Exchange-traded INR contracts in India cover only USD, EUR, GBP and JPY.
  • Limit order: Some AD banks will convert once SEK/INR reaches a level you set. Check availability and minimum amounts first.
  • EEFC holding: An EEFC account can hold up to 100 percent of export earnings in foreign currency and pays no interest. Each calendar month's credits must be converted to rupees by the last day of the next month, after approved uses or forward commitments, under para 3.1 of RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts.

How do you get the best SEK to INR rate?

  • Invoice in SEK: Billing in kronor avoids a conversion at the client's bank, so only your AD bank's spread applies.
  • Compare quotes: Check the SEK/INR rate your bank applied against the mid-market rate on this page for the same date.
  • Ask about charges: Agree in the contract who pays SWIFT sender, intermediary and receiving charges.
  • Batch payments: Bank margins are often tiered by amount, so fewer, larger transfers can get a narrower spread.
  • Watch Riksbank dates: The Riksbank's policy rate decisions can move SEK. Avoid converting large sums just before a decision unless you have hedged.

How do we source and check these rates?

  • Feed: XE live mid-market rates, published live; this site refreshes it every 15 minutes. The page refreshes at most hourly.
  • Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
  • Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
  • Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Swedish krona pegged to the euro like the Danish krone?

No. Sweden has kept a floating exchange rate since 19 November 1992, according to Sveriges Riksbank. The ECB Convergence Report of June 2026 confirms the krona did not take part in ERM II. SEK/INR therefore moves independently of EUR/INR, unlike the pegged Danish krone.

Can an Indian freelancer hold SEK in an EEFC account?

Yes, if your AD bank offers an EEFC account in Swedish kronor. Up to 100 percent of foreign exchange earnings can be credited, under RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts. The account pays no interest. Each month's credits must be converted to rupees by the end of the following month, after approved uses.

Can an exporter book a SEK to INR forward contract in India?

Yes. AD banks may offer deliverable forwards involving INR for hedging, under the RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings. Contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent can be hedged without first proving it. SEK/INR forward pricing varies, so compare quotes from your bank.

Which Riksbank rate affects SEK to INR?

The Riksbank policy rate is its main monetary policy tool and affects other Swedish interest rates. The Riksbank notes that policy deviating substantially from other countries' could have a considerable effect on the krona exchange rate. On the Indian side, RBI policy decisions affect the rupee, and both shape SEK/INR.

How volatile is SEK against other currencies for INR receivers?

The ECB Convergence Report of June 2026 found that the krona showed a high degree of volatility against the euro between June 2024 and June 2026. Exporters with large or delayed SEK receivables may find a forward or a limit order useful to reduce uncertainty.

How long can a Swedish client take to pay an Indian exporter in SEK under RBI rules?

Payment for services must be realised and repatriated within nine months from the invoice date, under Regulation 5(1) of the FEMA export regulations 2026. This applies to invoices in a foreign currency; INR invoices get twelve months. Your AD bank may extend the period on request if it accepts your reasons, so raise delays early.
