Why does your bank give you less than the TRY to INR rate on Google?
TRY/INR is a thin currency pair. An Indian AD bank may price TRY to INR as a cross rate through USD, so two spreads can apply. Banks may also quote wider spreads when the lira is volatile. Correspondent charges can further reduce the INR credited.
Say a bank converts TRY 250,000 at a TT buying rate 1.5% below the mid-market rate of ₹1.893. It credits about ₹4,66,201 instead of ₹4,73,300, a difference of ₹7,100 before any fees. The 1.5% is an illustration, not a quote from any bank.
Search engines show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. A card rate is a bank's own rate for card transactions, and a TT buying rate is the rate a bank pays when it buys foreign currency received by wire. Both sit below the mid-market rate.
What moves the TRY to INR rate?
Türkiye adopted a floating exchange rate regime on 22 February 2001. The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye says supply and demand set the lira and it sets no nominal or real exchange rate target. It does take measures against excessive appreciation or depreciation to reduce financial stability risks.
- Interest rates: The CBRT's Monetary Policy Committee sets the policy rate, the one-week repo auction rate at pre-scheduled meetings. The CBRT's own table shows it ranging from 4.5% in 2013 to 50% in 2024.
- Inflation: The CBRT's primary objective is price stability, and it uses its monetary and liquidity policies for disinflation when needed. Inflation above India's level can weaken the lira against the rupee over time.
- CBRT measures: The CBRT takes measures against excessive appreciation or depreciation of the lira, which can slow or reverse sudden moves.
- Risk sentiment: Shifts in global investor appetite for emerging market assets can move TRY against USD, which then flows into the TRY/INR cross rate.
- RBI action: RBI operations in the USD/INR market move the rupee side of the TRY/INR cross rate.
When should exporters convert TRY to INR?
Spot conversion, forwards, limit orders and EEFC holding are the four timing choices for TRY to INR. Spot is the simplest choice, and converting soon after receipt limits exposure to lira swings. RBI rules permit forwards, but TRY quotes depend on your AD bank. EEFC balances must be converted by the end of the following month.
- Spot: The bank converts TRY at its rate on the day the payment is credited. Compare the rate on your credit advice with the mid-market rate on this page.
- Forward: RBI's Risk Management Master Direction lets AD banks offer forwards involving INR to hedge contracted or anticipated exposures, and users may freely cancel and rebook them. Whether a TRY forward is quoted depends on your AD bank.
- Limit order: Some AD banks accept an instruction to convert when TRY/INR reaches a target rate. Ask whether your bank offers this for TRY and how long the order stays valid.
- EEFC holding: Up to 100% of export earnings can be credited to an EEFC account, which pays no interest. Each month's credits must be converted to rupees by the last day of the next month, after approved uses. Ask whether your AD bank holds TRY balances.
How do you get the best TRY to INR rate?
- Check margin: Compare your bank's TRY/INR rate with the mid-market rate on this page on the day of credit to measure the margin.
- Invoice currency: For longer payment terms, compare invoicing in USD or EUR with TRY, since the lira can move a lot between invoice and payment.
- Watch MPC dates: The CBRT announces policy decisions at 2:00 p.m. on meeting days, at least eight times a year. The lira can move on those dates.
- Charge option: Agree with the payer whether SWIFT charges are shared (SHA) or paid by the sender (OUR), so intermediary fees do not cut the amount received.
- Ask for a quote: Ask your AD bank for its TRY buying rate before the funds arrive, and whether a better rate applies above a set amount.

How do we source and check these rates?
- Feed: XE live mid-market rates, published live; this site refreshes it every 15 minutes. The page refreshes at most hourly.
- Markup: Markup is the gap between a platform's rate and the mid-market rate, taken from each platform's own published pricing. GST of 18% applies to fees where the platform says so.
- Stale data: If the feed fails, the page shows no rate and pauses the calculator rather than showing an old rate as current.
- Method: The full formula is on the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions
Do RBI rules let a client in Türkiye pay an Indian exporter in TRY instead of INR?
Yes. The FEMA Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations 2023 allow trade receipts from countries outside the Asian Clearing Union in Indian rupees or in any foreign currency. Türkiye is outside the ACU, so an invoice in TRY is permitted. The payment must still come through an authorised bank.
Does the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye target a TRY to INR or TRY to USD rate?
No. The CBRT states that the exchange rate is not used as a policy instrument and that it sets no nominal or real exchange rate target. It does take measures against excessive appreciation or depreciation of the lira. TRY/INR follows from market TRY/USD and USD/INR rates.
Why is the TRY to INR rate from my bank lower than the mid-market rate?
The mid-market rate sits halfway between buying and selling prices in the market. Your bank adds a margin when it buys TRY from you. Because TRY/INR is thinly traded, the bank may convert through USD, adding a second spread. Correspondent charges can reduce the INR amount further.
Can I keep TRY in an EEFC account instead of converting it to INR?
RBI rules allow up to 100% of export earnings to be credited to an EEFC account. The account pays no interest. Each month's credits must be converted to INR by the last day of the following month, after approved uses. Not every AD bank offers TRY balances, so check with yours.
Can an Indian exporter book a forward contract to sell TRY for INR?
Yes, in principle. RBI's Risk Management Master Direction lets AD banks offer forwards involving INR to hedge a contracted or anticipated exposure. Users may freely cancel and rebook these contracts. Banks quote forwards only in currencies they deal in, so ask your AD bank whether it quotes TRY forwards.
How long does an exporter have to receive TRY payments from Türkiye and convert them to INR?
Under the FEMA Export and Import Regulations 2026, the full export value of services must be realised and repatriated within nine months from the invoice date. The rule covers payments in TRY or any other currency. Converting to INR is a separate choice, subject to the EEFC conversion rule.
