Short answer
App developers in India can receive international payments through app store payouts, a SWIFT wire to an Indian bank, local currency account details in the client's country, or a card or online checkout. On USD 5,000, Skydo pays the most of the platforms with full published pricing for USD: about ₹4,71,037 on 3 Nov 2026.
| Method | Cost | Speed | FIRA |
|---|---|---|---|
| App store payout | The store's commission, Indian TDS where the store deducts it, possible bank or intermediary fees, and a conversion margin applied by the sending bank or your Indian bank. | Monthly. Google Play needs a balance of at least US$100 for a wire payout, per Google Play payout help. Apple pays when proceeds exceed the minimum monthly payment threshold for each country or region where you sell. | Google says FIRC requests for Indian developers go through its regulated processor and a partner bank, per Google payments help for India. For other stores, ask your AD bank for an inward remittance certificate. |
| SWIFT wire to an Indian bank | A sending fee on the client's side, possible intermediary deductions, an inward charge at some Indian banks and the bank's conversion margin. | Usually one to a few business days. From 9 October 2026, an RBI circular asks banks to endeavour to credit inward payments received during forex market hours on the same business day. | Your AD bank can issue a FIRC or inward remittance advice on request. Charges and format vary by bank. |
| Local currency account details | A conversion margin and sometimes a flat or percentage fee charged by the provider. The client usually pays only normal domestic transfer charges. | The client's leg is often same day or next day on the local rail. The INR credit in India depends on the provider and your bank. | Ask the provider whether it supplies a bank-issued inward remittance certificate or advice for each payment, showing the purpose code. |
| Card or online checkout | A percentage processing fee per transaction, often with a conversion margin and sometimes a fixed fee. | Usually a few business days after the card payment, depending on the gateway's payout schedule. | Ask the gateway whether it provides an inward remittance record per settlement or per transaction. |

How do international clients pay app developers?
- Ticket size: App store income arrives as one monthly payout that bundles many small purchases and subscriptions. Client work, such as building an app for a company abroad, is usually billed per milestone or as a monthly retainer, so a single invoice can be far larger.
- Currencies: Google Play says merchants in India are paid by wire from the United States in US dollars, per Google Play bank account help. Apple says its bank converts proceeds into the currency of your bank account, per App Store Connect payment help. Clients outside Asian Clearing Union countries can be invoiced in INR or any foreign currency under the FEMA (Manner of Receipt and Payment) Regulations, 2023.
- Geography: Store buyers can sit in any country where the app is listed, while the store itself pays you. Development clients are often startups, product companies and agencies in the US, UK, Europe, the Gulf and Australia.
- Payment methods: Store earnings reach you as a bank transfer from the store. Business clients usually pay by bank transfer through an accounts payable team. Some developers also sell licences or subscriptions on their own website through a card checkout.
Where does the money go between your client and your bank?
- 1Buyer pays the app storeDeduction: Sales tax or VAT where the store collects it. Apple calculates proceeds as the customer price minus applicable taxes and its commission, per [App Store Connect proceeds help](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect/getting-paid/view-payments-and-proceeds).
- 2App storeDeduction: The store's commission or service fee. Apple's [Small Business Program](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/small-business-program/) sets 15 percent for eligible developers, and Google Play publishes its own [service fees](https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/112622).
- 3Indian withholding taxDeduction: TDS deducted by the store, where it applies. Google deducts 0.1 percent with a PAN or 5 percent without one, per [Google Play withholding tax help](https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9384608).
- 4Sending and intermediary banksDeduction: Possible bank fees and transaction costs. Apple says payments may be reduced by fees from your bank or intermediate institutions, per [App Store Connect payment help](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect/getting-paid/overview-of-receiving-payments).
- 5Currency conversionDeduction: A conversion margin. Apple's bank converts proceeds into your bank account currency. A US dollar payout, such as Google Play's, is converted to INR by your Indian bank at its own rate.
- 6Your Indian bank accountDeduction: None in most cases, though some banks levy an inward charge. The INR credit arrives with an inward remittance record that you keep for GST, income tax and EDF records.
What are the ways for app developers to receive international payments?
How does App store payout work for app developers?
Google Play and the App Store collect from buyers, deduct their fees and taxes, and pay you once a month by bank transfer. Google Play pays around the 15th of the following month, per Google Play payout help. Apple pays within 45 days of the end of its fiscal month, per App Store Connect payment help.
- Pros: Buyers pay through the store, so you do not collect from each user; Payouts run automatically once your balance meets the minimum; The store handles billing, refunds and much of the sales tax on purchases
- Cons: Store commissions apply before any payout; Payouts follow a fixed monthly cycle; The store, or its bank, sets the payout date and any conversion it applies
- Cost: The store's commission, Indian TDS where the store deducts it, possible bank or intermediary fees, and a conversion margin applied by the sending bank or your Indian bank.
- Settlement: Monthly. Google Play needs a balance of at least US$100 for a wire payout, per Google Play payout help. Apple pays when proceeds exceed the minimum monthly payment threshold for each country or region where you sell.
- FIRA: Google says FIRC requests for Indian developers go through its regulated processor and a partner bank, per Google payments help for India. For other stores, ask your AD bank for an inward remittance certificate.
- Ideal for: Developers who earn from paid apps, in-app purchases or subscriptions sold through an app store.
How does SWIFT wire to an Indian bank work for app developers?
A client abroad sends an international payment from its bank to your Indian bank account using your bank's SWIFT code, account number and name. Your Indian AD bank converts the currency to INR, unless you hold the funds in a foreign currency account.
- Pros: Direct bank-to-bank route with no third-party provider; Your AD bank reports the receipt and can issue an inward remittance certificate; No per-transaction aggregator cap, so it suits large app build milestones
- Cons: The client may pay a sending fee; Intermediary banks may deduct charges, so less than the invoice can arrive; Your bank sets its own conversion rate
- Cost: A sending fee on the client's side, possible intermediary deductions, an inward charge at some Indian banks and the bank's conversion margin.
- Settlement: Usually one to a few business days. From 9 October 2026, an RBI circular asks banks to endeavour to credit inward payments received during forex market hours on the same business day.
- FIRA: Your AD bank can issue a FIRC or inward remittance advice on request. Charges and format vary by bank.
- Ideal for: Agencies and freelancers building apps for enterprise clients or large fixed-price projects.
How does Local currency account details work for app developers?
A provider gives you account details in the client's country, such as a US routing and account number or a European IBAN, in your name. The client pays them as a domestic transfer, and the provider converts the money and sends INR to your Indian bank account.
- Pros: The client makes an ordinary domestic payment; Suits monthly maintenance retainers paid by an accounts payable team; No SWIFT intermediary deductions on the client's leg
- Cons: The provider sets its own conversion rate and fee; Money passes through a third party before reaching your bank; A cross-border payment aggregator is capped at ₹25 lakh per inward transaction under the RBI Master Direction on Payment Aggregators
- Cost: A conversion margin and sometimes a flat or percentage fee charged by the provider. The client usually pays only normal domestic transfer charges.
- Settlement: The client's leg is often same day or next day on the local rail. The INR credit in India depends on the provider and your bank.
- FIRA: Ask the provider whether it supplies a bank-issued inward remittance certificate or advice for each payment, showing the purpose code.
- Ideal for: Developers with recurring app maintenance or development clients in the US, UK, Europe or Australia.
How does Card or online checkout work for app developers?
You send a client a payment link, or sell licences and subscriptions on your own website through a checkout that accepts cards. A card gateway collects the foreign currency, converts it and settles INR to your Indian bank account.
- Pros: Buyers can pay instantly by card; Works for web-based subscriptions and small one-off jobs; No need to share bank details
- Cons: Card processing fees are usually higher than bank transfers; Chargebacks can reverse a payment after delivery; Purchases inside an app may have to use the store's billing under store rules
- Cost: A percentage processing fee per transaction, often with a conversion margin and sometimes a fixed fee.
- Settlement: Usually a few business days after the card payment, depending on the gateway's payout schedule.
- FIRA: Ask the gateway whether it provides an inward remittance record per settlement or per transaction.
- Ideal for: Developers selling software licences, web subscriptions or small development jobs to individual buyers.

What should app developers look for beyond cost?
- Payout timing: Store income arrives weeks after the sale. Google Play pays around the 15th of the following month, and Apple pays within 45 days of the end of its fiscal month, which does not match the calendar month. Plan cash flow around these dates.
- Store tax profiles: Each store asks for tax details before paying. Google Play asks for your PAN to apply 0.1 percent TDS instead of 5 percent, per Google Play withholding tax help. Apple says all required tax forms must be submitted before it processes banking information, per App Store Connect banking help.
- Bank details: Enter the account holder name exactly as your bank shows it. Apple warns that a mismatch can cause a payment to be rejected, per App Store Connect banking help. Ask your bank for its inward SWIFT instructions before adding the account.
- Purpose code: Pick the code that matches the income. App store payouts and client development work may be reported under different codes, so confirm each one with your AD bank. See P0802 vs P0807.
- Reconciliation: A store payout bundles a month of sales across countries into one credit. Apple shows a seven-digit transaction ID with each payment, per App Store Connect proceeds help. Match each credit to the store's financial report and keep both for GST and income tax records.
What compliance documents do app developers need?
App developers in India exporting services need an inward remittance record, the correct purpose code, an LUT for GST and an EDF. The FEMA (Export and Import of Goods and Services) Regulations, 2026, in force from 1 October 2026, treat software as services. The EDF replaces SOFTEX and is due within 30 days from the end of the invoice month.
- FIRA or FIRC: FIRA is not a term defined in RBI regulations. CGST Rule 89(2)(c) asks for BRC or FIRC details for each invoice in a refund claim, and the DGFT eBRC FAQs explain self-generated eBRCs from bank data. See FIRC vs FIRA vs e-BRC.
- Purpose code: Banks report receipts in FETERS using the RBI purpose code list. P0802 is "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)". P0807 is "Off site software exports". Store help pages do not state the code used for payouts, so ask your AD bank which code it reports.
- LUT: File a Letter of Undertaking in Form GST RFD-11 on the GST portal before invoicing foreign clients, so the export goes out without IGST under CGST Rule 96A. See LUT filing on the GST portal.
- GST reporting: If you are registered for GST, report each export invoice as a zero-rated export in your GST return. Keep the inward remittance record and the store's financial report for each payout, because a refund claim needs those details.
- EDF: Regulation 3(2) requires an EDF within 30 days from the end of the invoice month, and one EDF can cover a month's exports. Software exporters file with an AD bank or STPI. Ask your AD bank how the EDF applies to monthly store payouts. See EDF form for exports.
- SOFTEX: Circular No. 20 supersedes the SOFTEX circulars from 1 October 2026. Software exports invoiced from that date are declared in the EDF. See SOFTEX for freelancers for the earlier process.
What tax applies to international income for app developers?
Income app developers in India earn from foreign clients is usually a zero-rated export for GST and taxable income in India. Under IGST Act section 16, an export of services under an LUT carries no IGST. App store payouts can carry Indian TDS deducted by the store. Income tax follows the Income-tax Act, 2025 from tax year 2026-27.
- GST zero-rating: A supply meeting the five conditions in IGST Act section 2(6) is an export of services. These include a recipient outside India and payment in convertible foreign exchange or in INR where RBI permits. Whether store sales meet these conditions depends on your store agreement, so check with a GST adviser.
- Store fees: Google says developers located in India must determine and pay any applicable tax on the service fees it charges them, per Google Play tax help. Google also says it deducts GST TCS, if any, on paid apps and in-app purchases.
- TDS: Google deducts Indian withholding tax of 0.1 percent of the customer price, excluding GST, when you have given your PAN, and 5 percent when you have not, per Google Play withholding tax help. Claim the deducted tax in your return. See TDS on marketplace payouts.
- Income tax: The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. The presumptive schemes, including old section 44ADA for professionals, are consolidated in section 58. Check whether your app or development income qualifies. See section 44ADA for freelancers.
- US forms: US clients and stores may ask for Form W-8BEN to document that you are a foreign person. You give it to the payer, not the IRS. See W-8BEN for Indian freelancers.
