Short answer
Etsy sellers in India receive Etsy sales through Etsy's own payout to a linked payment account and then an Indian bank. On USD 500, Kotak Mahindra Bank pays the most of the platforms with full published pricing for USD: about ₹46,481 on 3 Nov 2026.
| Method | Cost | Speed | FIRA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace payout to an Indian bank account | Etsy's fees per Etsy help on fees and taxes, plus withdrawal and conversion fees charged by the linked payment account when it pays INR to the bank. | Etsy deposits every Monday, and new sellers' funds are generally eligible 14 days after a sale, per Etsy deposit help. The bank credit then depends on the linked account's payout time. | Etsy's help pages do not describe an inward remittance certificate. Ask the linked payment account and the Indian bank which inward remittance record they issue for each payout, and whether it shows a purpose code. |
| SWIFT wire to an Indian bank | A sending fee on the buyer's side, possible intermediary deductions, an inward charge at some Indian banks and the bank's conversion margin. | Usually one to a few business days. From 9 October 2026, an RBI circular asks banks to endeavour to credit inward payments received during forex market hours on the same business day. | The AD bank can issue an inward remittance certificate or advice on request, and sends the remittance to DGFT for eBRC generation. Format and charges vary by bank. |
| Local currency account details | A conversion margin and sometimes a flat or percentage fee charged by the provider. The buyer usually pays only normal domestic transfer charges. | The buyer's leg is often same day or next day on the local rail. The INR credit depends on the provider's payout cycle. | Ask the provider whether it supplies a bank-issued inward remittance record for each payment, showing the purpose code and the remitter's name. |
| Card or online checkout | A percentage processing fee per transaction, often with a currency conversion margin and sometimes a fixed fee. | Usually a few business days after the card payment, depending on the gateway's payout schedule. | Ask the gateway whether it provides an inward remittance record per settlement or per transaction, and what it gives the AD bank for EDPMS closure. |

How do international clients pay Etsy sellers?
- Ticket size: Many Etsy orders are single retail parcels of modest value. Etsy pays Indian sellers in one weekly deposit, so a week's payout can combine many small orders. Direct wholesale or custom orders from repeat buyers can be larger.
- Currencies: Buyers browse and pay in their own currency, but Etsy deposits Indian sellers' funds only in USD, per Etsy help for sellers in India. Listing in a currency other than the payment account currency adds Etsy's 2.5 percent currency conversion fee on the sale amount, per Etsy help on currency conversion fees.
- Geography: New Etsy shops opened in India can only sell internationally, and Indian shops on Etsy Payments cannot accept domestic sales, per Etsy help for sellers in India. Buyers are retail shoppers in many countries.
- Payment methods: Buyers pay Etsy at checkout by credit or debit card, Etsy gift cards and other options such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, per Etsy help on Etsy Payments. Etsy then sends the seller's balance in USD to a linked payment account each Monday, per Etsy help for sellers in India. That account pays the seller's Indian bank.
Where does the money go between your client and your bank?
- 1Buyer's checkout on EtsyDeduction: None for the seller at this stage. The buyer pays Etsy in the buyer's own currency, and Etsy holds the sale in the seller's Etsy payment account.
- 2Etsy payment accountDeduction: Transaction fee, payment processing fee, listing and regulatory fees, TCS and TDS. Etsy applies fees owed and Indian tax collections to incoming funds before the balance becomes available for deposit.
- 3Weekly USD depositDeduction: None by Etsy for the deposit itself. Etsy sends the available USD balance to the linked payment account every Monday at 11:30am ET.
- 4Linked payment accountDeduction: Withdrawal and currency conversion fees. The linked account converts USD to INR when it pays the seller's Indian bank, and may charge for this.
- 5Seller's Indian bankDeduction: Possible inward remittance charges at some banks. The bank credits INR and records the remittance details used for EDPMS closure and eBRC.
What are the ways for Etsy sellers to receive international payments?
How does Marketplace payout to an Indian bank account work for Etsy sellers?
Etsy collects the buyer's payment, deducts its fees and Indian tax collections, and deposits the USD balance each Monday to a linked payment account that Etsy requires for India. That account converts the money and pays INR to the seller's Indian bank, per Etsy help for sellers in India.
- Pros: Required route for all Etsy sales by Indian shops; Buyers pay with familiar methods and Etsy handles checkout; Etsy shows fees, TDS and TCS line by line in the payment account
- Cons: Only weekly deposits, and only in USD; New sellers' funds are generally held about 14 days after a sale; Each payout bundles many orders, which makes matching to shipping bills harder
- Cost: Etsy's fees per Etsy help on fees and taxes, plus withdrawal and conversion fees charged by the linked payment account when it pays INR to the bank.
- Settlement: Etsy deposits every Monday, and new sellers' funds are generally eligible 14 days after a sale, per Etsy deposit help. The bank credit then depends on the linked account's payout time.
- FIRA: Etsy's help pages do not describe an inward remittance certificate. Ask the linked payment account and the Indian bank which inward remittance record they issue for each payout, and whether it shows a purpose code.
- Ideal for: All retail orders placed through an Etsy shop.
How does SWIFT wire to an Indian bank work for Etsy sellers?
A wholesale or custom buyer who orders outside Etsy wires the money to the seller's current account or EEFC account at an Indian AD bank, quoting the invoice. The bank converts to INR or keeps foreign currency, then links the receipt to the shipping bill in EDPMS.
- Pros: Direct bank-to-bank record the AD bank can match to the shipping bill; No per-transaction aggregator cap for larger orders; Advance payments can be received before shipping
- Cons: The buyer may pay a sending fee; Intermediary banks may deduct charges, leaving a short payment; The bank's conversion rate includes a margin over the mid-market rate
- Cost: A sending fee on the buyer's side, possible intermediary deductions, an inward charge at some Indian banks and the bank's conversion margin.
- Settlement: Usually one to a few business days. From 9 October 2026, an RBI circular asks banks to endeavour to credit inward payments received during forex market hours on the same business day.
- FIRA: The AD bank can issue an inward remittance certificate or advice on request, and sends the remittance to DGFT for eBRC generation. Format and charges vary by bank.
- Ideal for: Wholesale, custom and repeat orders that a buyer places directly, outside Etsy.
How does Local currency account details work for Etsy sellers?
A provider gives the seller account details in the buyer's country, such as a US routing and account number or a European IBAN. The direct buyer pays them as a domestic transfer, and the provider converts the money and pays INR to the seller's Indian bank account.
- Pros: The buyer makes an ordinary domestic payment; Suits repeat small and mid-size direct orders; No SWIFT intermediary deductions on the buyer's leg
- Cons: The provider sets its own conversion rate and fee; A cross-border payment aggregator can process at most ₹25 lakh per inward transaction, per RBI rules; The seller must check that the provider passes the details the AD bank needs to close the shipping bill
- Cost: A conversion margin and sometimes a flat or percentage fee charged by the provider. The buyer usually pays only normal domestic transfer charges.
- Settlement: The buyer's leg is often same day or next day on the local rail. The INR credit depends on the provider's payout cycle.
- FIRA: Ask the provider whether it supplies a bank-issued inward remittance record for each payment, showing the purpose code and the remitter's name.
- Ideal for: Sellers with repeat direct buyers in the US, UK, Europe or Australia.
How does Card or online checkout work for Etsy sellers?
A seller with an own web store or payment link accepts debit or credit cards from direct buyers. A card gateway collects the foreign currency, converts it and settles INR to the seller's Indian bank account.
- Pros: First-time buyers can pay at once; Suits single parcels shipped by post or courier; No bank details need to be shared
- Cons: Card processing fees are usually higher than bank transfers; Chargebacks can reverse a payment after the parcel ships; The seller handles checkout, disputes and refunds without a marketplace
- Cost: A percentage processing fee per transaction, often with a currency conversion margin and sometimes a fixed fee.
- Settlement: Usually a few business days after the card payment, depending on the gateway's payout schedule.
- FIRA: Ask the gateway whether it provides an inward remittance record per settlement or per transaction, and what it gives the AD bank for EDPMS closure.
- Ideal for: Sellers who also run their own online store alongside an Etsy shop.

What should Etsy sellers look for beyond cost?
- Payout timing: New sellers' funds are generally eligible for deposit 14 days after a sale, and Etsy may hold a rolling reserve, per Etsy deposit help. Etsy sends Indian sellers' deposits only on Mondays. Plan stock and shipping costs around this cycle.
- Shipping bill matching: Every parcel exported on its own shipping bill or postal bill creates an EDPMS entry, while Etsy pays weekly lump sums. For shipping bills up to ₹10 lakh, Regulation 4(2) lets the AD bank close entries on the exporter's declaration, filed singly or quarterly in bulk. See EDPMS closure.
- Name match: Etsy says enrolment may take longer or fail if the legal name does not match the bank account name, per Etsy help for sellers in India. Enrol as an individual for an account in your own name, or as a business with sole proprietorship for a trade name account.
- Post and courier: An older DGFT e-commerce handbook says postal exporters register with the Department of Posts using their IEC, GSTIN and AD code, and file a Postal Bill of Export. From 1 April 2026, CBIC removed the ₹10 lakh cap per courier export consignment, per a PIB release. See ecommerce export rules.
- Digital items: Etsy lets Indian shops sell digital items to buyers anywhere except India, per Etsy help for sellers in India. Digital downloads are not shipped goods, so ask the AD bank how to report them and which purpose code applies.
What compliance documents do Etsy sellers need?
Etsy sellers in India who ship goods abroad need an IEC, an AD code registered with Customs, an EDF for each export and payment matched to the shipping bill in EDPMS. Under the FEMA (Export and Import of Goods and Services) Regulations, 2026, the EDF is deemed part of the shipping bill at EDI ports.
- IEC: Para 2.05 of Foreign Trade Policy 2023, Chapter 2 says no export of goods can be made without an Importer-Exporter Code unless exempted. The IEC is the same as the PAN, is issued online by DGFT and must be updated every year between April and June. See how to apply for an IEC.
- AD code: Customs links each shipping bill to the exporter's AD bank through the AD code. The ICEGATE FAQs say the AD code is registered online from the user profile on ICEGATE, and approval can take 7 to 10 working days while pending with Customs. See AD code registration.
- Shipping bill and EDF: Regulation 3(1) requires a goods exporter to declare the full export value in the EDF at the time of export. At an EDI port the EDF is deemed part of the shipping bill. At a non-EDI port, the specified authority forwards the authenticated EDF to the AD bank. See EDF form for exports.
- EDPMS: Regulation 4(2) requires the AD bank to close or update the EDPMS entry when it credits the export receipt. Shipping bills up to ₹10 lakh may be closed on the exporter's declaration, one by one or quarterly in bulk. See checking outstanding shipping bills.
- eBRC: DGFT's eBRC system receives inward remittance messages directly from banks, and exporters self-certify eBRCs against them. The DGFT eBRC FAQs say the exporter registers on the DGFT website, links the IEC and generates the eBRC from the Services menu. See eBRC on DGFT.
- FIRA and purpose code: FIRA is not a term defined in RBI regulations; banks issue an inward remittance certificate or advice on request. Goods receipts use Group 01 of the RBI purpose code list, where P0102 is "Realisation of export bills (in respect of goods) sent on collection (full invoice value)". Ask the AD bank which code it applies to Etsy payouts. See purpose code for export of goods.
- Realisation: Regulation 5 requires the full export value of goods to be realised within nine months from the date of shipment, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in INR, under the 22 September 2026 amendment. These rules replaced the earlier Master Direction from 1 October 2026, per A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20. See export realisation period.
What tax applies to international income for Etsy sellers?
Etsy sales shipped abroad from India are a zero-rated supply for GST, and profit is taxed as business income. Under IGST Act section 16, sellers can export under an LUT without paying IGST. Etsy collects 0.5 percent TCS and deducts 0.1 percent TDS, which sellers can claim as credit. Eligible sellers may use section 58.
- LUT route: File a Letter of Undertaking in Form GST RFD-11 before exporting to ship without paying IGST under CGST Rule 96A. Unused input tax credit can then be claimed as a refund. See LUT filing on the GST portal.
- GSTIN and TCS: Etsy requires an active and regular GSTIN and collects 0.5 percent Tax Collected at Source on transactions through Etsy Payments, per Etsy India tax help. Etsy reports it against the GSTIN, so the seller can claim credit. Etsy may suspend a shop whose GSTIN is not active. See GST registration for exporters.
- TDS: Etsy deducts TDS on all transactions at 0.1 percent when the seller provides a PAN or GSTIN, and may apply 5 percent if the PAN is missing or non-compliant, per Etsy India tax help. The PAN must be the one inside the GSTIN. See TDS on marketplace payouts.
- Section 58: The Income-tax Act, 2025 moves old section 44AD into section 58 from tax year 2026-27, per the Income Tax Department FAQ. For a resident individual, HUF or firm other than an LLP with turnover up to ₹2 crore, or ₹3 crore if cash receipts are within 5 percent, profit is taken as 6 percent of receipts through banking or online modes plus 8 percent of other receipts, or actual profit if higher. Old section 44AD applied up to tax year 2025-26.
- Unrealised exports: CGST Rule 96B requires an exporter of goods who got a GST refund to repay it with interest, to the extent sale proceeds are not realised within the FEMA period. The repayment is due within thirty days of that period ending. Keep Etsy order records that link each refund claim to a payout.

Frequently asked questions
Do Etsy sellers in India need a GSTIN to receive Etsy payments?
Yes. Etsy sellers in India must have an active and regular GSTIN on file, per Etsy help for sellers in India. Etsy checks it periodically and will suspend the shop and withhold deposits until a valid GSTIN is added. Etsy also uses the GSTIN to report the 0.5 percent TCS it collects.
Which currency do Etsy sellers in India receive their Etsy deposits in?
Etsy deposits Indian sellers' funds only in USD, to a linked payment account each Monday at 11:30am ET, which is 9pm in India, per Etsy help for sellers in India. The linked account then converts the money and pays INR to the seller's Indian bank, and it may charge withdrawal and conversion fees.
