You can receive CNY in India through local yuan collection details where a provider offers them, a SWIFT wire to your Indian bank, or a card or online checkout. Personal remittance apps do not accept trade payments. On CNY 33,000, Skydo pays the most of the platforms with full published pricing for CNY: about ₹4,64,830 on 4 Nov 2026.
| Method | Cost | Speed | FIRA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local CNY account details | Usually a percentage or flat fee charged by the provider that issues the details; the client's own bank sets any transfer charge on its side | Depends on whether the client's payment counts as domestic or cross-border in China, and on the provider's payout cycle to India | Depends on the provider; ask whether it issues an e-FIRA or bank advice with the purpose code for each receipt |
| SWIFT wire to an Indian bank | Sending bank fee in China, possible intermediary bank deductions, and your Indian bank's inward remittance charge | Varies with document checks at the client's bank and the banks in the chain; ask your bank to trace the payment with its UETR | Your AD bank can issue an inward remittance advice, often called a FIRA; ask how and when it is issued |
| Card or online checkout | A percentage of each payment plus possible cross-border and conversion charges | Paid out to your Indian account on the gateway's settlement cycle | Gateways working as RBI-authorised PA-CBs must give documents for EDPMS closure; ask what they issue |

What is the real CNY to INR rate you receive?
The real CNY rate is the rupee amount you receive after all margins. The RBI exchange rates panel shows no FBIL rate for CNY. Banks often price yuan through US dollars, and providers may add a margin. For example, if the mid-market rate were Rs 13.50 per yuan and you got Rs 13.30, that example markup is about 1.5%.
Today's rate, its history and every platform's payout are on the CNY to INR rate page.

Can you hold CNY in India?
Indian residents can hold export earnings in an Exchange Earner's Foreign Currency (EEFC) account with an AD bank. Up to 100% of export and professional earnings can be credited under the RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts, paragraph 3.1. The account pays no interest. Check whether your bank offers EEFC accounts in CNY.
- Who qualifies: A person resident in India receiving foreign exchange earnings through normal banking channels, including exporters and professionals earning fees in an individual capacity, under paragraph 3.1.
- Conversion rule: Each calendar month's accruals should be converted into rupees by the last day of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Ask your AD bank how it applies paragraph 3.1.
- Uses: Balances can pay for permitted current and capital account transactions abroad, so yuan can settle costs such as Chinese suppliers or trade fairs. Credit facilities against EEFC balances are not allowed under paragraph 3.1.
- Alternatives: If your bank does not hold yuan, it may convert CNY to INR on arrival or credit a USD EEFC account. Some providers of local yuan details may let you keep a balance before payout.
When should you convert CNY to INR?
- Spot: Convert each CNY receipt at the rate on the day it arrives. This is simple and suits small, regular invoices.
- Forward contract: Fix a rate today for a future CNY receipt with your AD bank. The hedge cannot exceed the value or tenor of the export exposure under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings, paragraph 2.4. Ask your bank whether it quotes CNY/INR forwards. See forward contracts for exporters.
- Limit order: Ask your bank or provider whether it can convert automatically when CNY reaches a rate you set, and what happens if the rate is never reached.
- Natural hedge: Keep CNY in an EEFC account where your bank offers one, and use it for yuan costs such as Chinese suppliers or travel, so less needs converting.
What documents and compliance apply to CNY receipts?
A CNY export receipt follows the same rules as any foreign currency receipt. Payments from China, outside the Asian Clearing Union, may be in rupees or any foreign currency under the FEMA Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations, 2023. You need a purpose code, proof of receipt and, for services, an EDF.
- Purpose code: Each inward remittance carries an RBI purpose code from the FETERS purpose code list. For example, P0802 is "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)" and P1006 is "Business and management consultancy and public relations services".
- EDF: From 1 October 2026, service exporters file an Export Declaration Form within 30 days from the end of the invoice month under Regulation 3(2) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. The EDF replaces SOFTEX, as A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars.
- Realisation: Export value must be realised within nine months, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees, under Regulation 5 as amended on 22 September 2026. Your AD bank may extend this.
- FIRA: FIRA is not a term defined in FEMA or the 2026 Regulations. It is a bank or provider advice confirming the credit, and you keep it as proof of export receipt.
- PA-CB safety: Card and online checkout providers must be RBI-authorised PA-CBs. They hold export proceeds in a separate Inward Collection Account per currency, with a Rs 25 lakh cap per transaction, under the RBI Master Direction on Payment Aggregators, paragraphs 11 and 16.

Frequently asked questions
Are CNY, RMB and yuan the same currency for an Indian invoice?
Yes. Renminbi (RMB) is the name of China's currency, yuan is its unit, and CNY is its ISO currency code. Payment systems such as CIPS refer to cross-border RMB payments. Write CNY and the amount in yuan on your invoice so the Chinese bank and your Indian bank read the currency the same way.
Why is there no FBIL reference rate for CNY on the RBI website?
The RBI exchange rates panel shows FBIL rates for USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, AED and IDR, with no CNY. Your bank sets its own CNY to INR rate, often by crossing the CNY/USD and USD/INR rates. Compare the rupees you receive with a mid-market CNY rate on the same day to see the margin.
Can a client in China send CNY to an Indian bank through CIPS?
Possibly. CIPS is the PBOC-approved wholesale system for cross-border RMB payment and settlement, running on a 5x24 hour plus 4 hour basis. Whether a CNY payment reaches your Indian account through CIPS or a correspondent bank depends on the banks involved. Ask your AD bank which routing details to give the client.
Why does a Chinese client's bank ask for a tax record before a large CNY payment?
Under STA and SAFE Announcement No. 40 of 2013, still in force as listed by SAFE, a payer in China files a tax record before a single outward payment above USD 50,000 equivalent for services. Smaller CNY payments do not need it. Send a clear contract and invoice so the client can file quickly.
Can a client in Hong Kong pay offshore CNY to an Indian freelancer?
Yes, by international transfer. Hong Kong's Renminbi RTGS system handles yuan payments between banks in Hong Kong, through a clearing bank that holds a settlement account with the People's Bank of China. A payment to India still goes by SWIFT. Check that your AD bank accepts CNY before sharing details.
Which purpose code applies to CNY received for software services?
CNY received for software services often uses P0802, "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)", or P0807, "Off site software exports", in the RBI purpose code list. Consulting fits P1006. The currency does not change the purpose code. See P0802 purpose code.
Is IGST charged on services invoiced in CNY under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT)?
No IGST is paid on a qualifying CNY export invoice supplied under a Letter of Undertaking under Rule 96A. Export of services is zero-rated under IGST Act section 16. Section 2(6) requires payment in convertible foreign exchange, or rupees where RBI permits. Confirm yuan receipts with your tax adviser.
Can China withhold tax on CNY fees paid to an Indian business?
It can for some payments. Article 12 of the India-China tax agreement lets China tax fees for technical services at up to 10 percent of the gross amount. Article 23 lets India give credit for tax paid in China. Ask the Chinese client for the tax payment certificate if it deducts tax from a CNY payment.
