What is the real JPY to INR rate you receive?
The real JPY rate is the rupee amount received after all margins. The RBI exchange rates panel quotes the FBIL rate in rupees per 100 JPY. Banks pay a lower TT buying rate, and card or platform conversions add a markup. For example, Rs 60.30 received against an example mid-market rate of Rs 61.00 is a markup of about 1.1%.
Today's rate, its history and every platform's payout are on the JPY to INR rate page.

Can you hold JPY in India?
Indian residents can hold JPY export earnings in an Exchange Earner's Foreign Currency (EEFC) account with an AD bank. Up to 100% of export and professional earnings can be credited under the RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts, paragraph 3.1. The account pays no interest. Check whether your bank offers EEFC accounts in JPY.
- Who qualifies: A person resident in India receiving foreign exchange earnings through normal banking channels, including exporters and professionals earning fees in an individual capacity, under paragraph 3.1.
- Conversion rule: Each calendar month's accruals should be converted into rupees by the last day of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Ask your AD bank how it applies paragraph 3.1.
- Uses: Balances can pay for permitted current and capital account transactions abroad, so JPY can settle yen costs such as Japanese suppliers or travel. Credit facilities against EEFC balances are not allowed under paragraph 3.1.
- Alternatives: Some providers of local JPY details may let you keep a yen balance before payout. Ask how the balance is held, and remember the rupee credit in India still needs export documents.
When should you convert JPY to INR?
- Spot: Convert each JPY receipt at the rate on the day it arrives. This is simple and suits small, regular invoices.
- Forward contract: Fix a JPY to INR rate today for a future receipt with your AD bank. The hedge cannot exceed the value or tenor of the export exposure under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings, paragraph 2.4. Ask your bank whether it quotes JPY/INR forwards. See forward contracts for exporters.
- Limit order: Ask your bank or provider whether it can convert automatically when JPY reaches a rate you set per 100 yen, and what happens if the rate is never reached.
- Natural hedge: Keep JPY in an EEFC account and use it for yen expenses such as Japanese software, events or travel, so less needs converting.
What documents and compliance apply to JPY receipts?
A JPY export receipt follows the same rules as any foreign currency receipt. Payments from Japan, outside the Asian Clearing Union, may be in any foreign currency under the FEMA Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations, 2023. You need a purpose code, proof of receipt and, for services, an EDF.
- Purpose code: Each inward remittance carries an RBI purpose code from the FETERS purpose code list. For example, P0802 is "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)" and P1006 is "Business and management consultancy and public relations services".
- EDF: From 1 October 2026, service exporters file an Export Declaration Form within 30 days from the end of the invoice month under Regulation 3(2) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. Exporters of services other than software may instead file it on or before the date payment is received. The EDF replaces SOFTEX, as A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars.
- Realisation: Export value must be realised within nine months, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees, under Regulation 5 as amended on 22 September 2026. Your AD bank may extend this.
- FIRA: FIRA is not a term defined in FEMA or the 2026 Regulations. It is a bank or provider advice confirming the credit, and you keep it as proof of export receipt.
- PA-CB safety: Card and online checkout providers must be RBI-authorised PA-CBs. They hold export proceeds in a separate Inward Collection Account per currency, with a Rs 25 lakh cap per transaction, under the RBI Master Direction on Payment Aggregators, paragraphs 11 and 16.

Frequently asked questions
Why are JPY to INR exchange rates quoted per 100 yen?
JPY to INR rates are commonly quoted per 100 yen because one yen is worth well under one rupee. The RBI exchange rates panel lists INR per 100 JPY from FBIL (Rs 61.19 on 8 October 2026), while USD, GBP and EUR are per one unit. Check whether a quote is per 1 or per 100 yen.
Can a Japanese client pay JPY into an Indian bank account through the Zengin System?
No. The Zengin System relays domestic yen credit transfers between banks in Japan. A client can use it only to pay Japanese account details, such as local JPY details a provider opens in your name. Paying JPY to your Indian bank account directly needs an overseas remittance over SWIFT.
Can a Japanese client send a JPY transfer at night or on a holiday?
Often, yes, for the domestic leg. Zengin's More Time System has supported yen transfers at night, on weekends and on holidays since October 2018 at participating banks, for transfers under ¥100 million each. This covers transfers within Japan only. A SWIFT wire to India follows bank and forex market hours.
Which purpose code applies to JPY received for software services?
JPY received for software services often uses P0802, "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)", or P0807, "Off site software exports", in the RBI purpose code list. Consulting fits P1006. The currency does not change the purpose code. See P0802 purpose code.
Can JPY be received through a remittance app as payment for export services?
No. Remittance services that pay out in India under the Money Transfer Service Scheme allow only personal inward remittances. The RBI Master Direction on MTSS bars trade related remittances and caps each remittance at USD 2,500. JPY export income must come through a bank or another authorised channel.
Is IGST charged on services invoiced in JPY under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT)?
No IGST is paid on JPY export invoices supplied under a Letter of Undertaking under Rule 96A. Export of services is zero-rated under IGST Act section 16. One condition in section 2(6) is payment in convertible foreign exchange, and the Japanese yen meets that test.
Does a Japanese client withhold tax on JPY fees paid to an Indian business?
It can. Japan's National Tax Agency lists 20.42% withholding on some Japan-source income paid to non-residents. Article 12 of the India-Japan tax convention caps tax on fees for technical services at 10%. Article 12 excludes an individual's independent personal services, which Article 14 generally leaves taxable only in India. Ask your client which treaty form applies.
Does a Japanese client report a large JPY payment sent to India?
Only above a threshold. Under Japan's Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, a payment to a non-resident above ¥30 million may need a payment report, according to the Bank of Japan. Amounts of ¥30 million or less need no report. A paper report for a payment made through a bank goes to that bank.
