What are the ways to receive money from Switzerland to India?

How does each method of receiving money from Switzerland work?

How does Local CHF account details work for payments from Switzerland?

A regulated provider gives you Swiss franc account details with a Swiss IBAN. Your Swiss client pays them as an ordinary domestic CHF transfer. The provider converts the francs and sends rupees to your Indian bank account.

  • Pros: Your client pays as if paying a supplier in Switzerland; A Swiss instant payment can credit the collection account within 10 seconds; No correspondent bank in the payment from your client
  • Cons: The franc account sits with a provider abroad, so you depend on its onboarding and checks; The conversion rate and fee are set by the provider; Money still has to move from the provider to India as a separate step
  • Cost: Usually a percentage fee or FX margin charged by the provider on conversion. The client pays its own bank's charge for a domestic CHF transfer, which is often low.
  • Settlement: A Swiss instant payment reaches the franc account within 10 seconds, at any time of day, if both banks support it. SIX says smaller Swiss banks must be able to receive instant payments only from the end of 2026. A standard domestic transfer settles through SIC. Onward credit to India depends on the provider's payout schedule.
  • FIRA: Ask the provider whether it issues an inward remittance advice or FIRA for each payout and which purpose code it reports.
  • Ideal for: Freelancers and small agencies with repeat Swiss clients who prefer to pay a Swiss IBAN from e-banking.

How does SWIFT wire to an Indian bank work for payments from Switzerland?

Your client sends an international transfer in Swiss francs or another currency from a Swiss bank to your Indian bank account using your bank's SWIFT code and account number. Your AD bank converts the amount to rupees or credits an EEFC account.

  • Pros: Works with any Indian AD bank account; Your bank records the purpose code and issues an inward remittance advice directly; Suits large invoices
  • Cons: Correspondent and beneficiary bank charges can reduce the amount received; Your client may pay a higher outgoing fee than for a domestic Swiss payment; Missing purpose details can delay the credit
  • Cost: The Swiss bank's outgoing charge, possible correspondent bank deductions, your Indian bank's inward charge, and the bank's conversion margin.
  • Settlement: Often one to three business days, depending on the banks involved. Under an RBI circular of 9 April 2026, banks should endeavour to credit inward payments received during forex market hours on the same business day, with effect six months from the circular date.
  • FIRA: Your AD bank issues an inward remittance advice or FIRC on request. The bank also generates an inward remittance message that DGFT uses to issue the e-BRC.
  • Ideal for: Registered exporters and companies with high-value invoices or clients who only pay by bank wire.

How does Card or online checkout work for payments from Switzerland?

You send a payment link or invoice. Your Swiss client pays by card or another online method. A payment aggregator collects the francs or euros and settles rupees to your bank account.

  • Pros: Easy for clients who prefer card payment; Can support one-off or small invoices; Payment status is visible online
  • Cons: Card processing fees are usually higher than bank transfer costs; Chargebacks and refunds are possible; Per-transaction limits apply to cross-border aggregators
  • Cost: A percentage processing fee per transaction, often with a fixed fee and a conversion margin. Cross-border cards can attract extra charges.
  • Settlement: Depends on the aggregator's settlement cycle after the card payment is captured.
  • FIRA: Ask whether the aggregator provides a FIRA or settlement advice per transaction or in a batch.
  • Ideal for: Consultants, course sellers and small businesses selling online to Swiss customers.

How does Remittance app work for payments from Switzerland?

Your client sends francs through a money transfer service from Switzerland. The service pays rupees into your Indian bank account.

  • Pros: Familiar to many senders; Payments can arrive quickly; Simple for one-off amounts
  • Cons: Many services are designed for personal transfers; The purpose of payment may be recorded as a personal remittance; Export documents can be hard to obtain
  • Cost: A sender fee plus a conversion margin set by the service. The sender sees the cost when making the transfer.
  • Settlement: Often minutes to a few days, depending on the service and your bank.
  • FIRA: Your Indian bank receives the payment and may issue an inward remittance advice. Check that it shows an export purpose code.
  • Ideal for: Occasional small payments from individual Swiss clients.

How do Switzerland clients usually pay Indian vendors?

A Swiss client pays Swiss franc amounts at home through Swiss Interbank Clearing (SIC), including instant payments, when you share a Swiss IBAN. Switzerland also takes part in the SEPA schemes for euro payments. India is outside both, so a direct payment to an Indian bank goes by SWIFT international transfer.

  • Rails: Every Swiss franc payment between banks runs through SIC, operated by SIX and monitored by the Swiss National Bank. Euro payments can use SEPA. Payments to Indian bank accounts use SWIFT.
  • Client enters: For a Swiss transfer: account holder name and IBAN. A Swiss IBAN has 21 characters and starts with CH. For SWIFT: your name, Indian account number, your bank's SWIFT code, bank address and the invoice reference.
  • Client cost: Each Swiss bank sets its own charges. SEPA does not contain price regulations for Switzerland, because EU price rules apply only within the EU and EEA. A SWIFT transfer to India carries the Swiss bank's international payment charges.
  • Speed: A Swiss instant payment reaches another bank customer account in Switzerland within 10 seconds, at any time of day. SWIFT payments to India often take one to three business days, depending on the banks involved.
  • Limits: Swiss instant payments and SIC transfers only reach accounts in Switzerland. A Swiss client cannot use them to pay an Indian bank account. The client needs Swiss account details or must send a SWIFT transfer.

Which platforms are best for receiving CHF in India?

The table ranks platforms with full published pricing for CHF by the INR received on CHF 5,000, then lists other business platforms that accept CHF, unranked. Fees were checked on 30 Sept 2026 or later.

Why do you receive less than the mid-market CHF to INR rate?

You receive less than the invoice because each step can deduct a fee or apply a rate below mid-market. Bank charges, correspondent deductions and conversion margins add up. For example, at an example mid-market rate of Rs 110 per Swiss franc, a 1% margin on CHF 2,000 costs about Rs 2,200 before any fixed fees.

How much INR do you receive on CHF 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 from Switzerland?

Each row applies the platform's published fee, FX markup and 18% GST on the fee to the mid-market rate of ₹115.80 per CHF for 4 Nov 2026.

What should you consider when choosing how to get paid from Switzerland?

  • Total cost: Add the fixed fee, any percentage fee and the conversion margin. Compare the rupees credited, not the headline fee.
  • Local rail coverage: Check whether the method accepts domestic CHF transfers from your Swiss client, including instant payments, or only euro SEPA payments.
  • Settlement speed: Look at how long francs take to reach the collection account and how long rupees take to reach your Indian bank.
  • FIRA: Confirm that you receive an inward remittance advice or FIRA for every payment, with the purpose code shown.
  • Client experience: A Swiss client usually prefers paying a Swiss IBAN from e-banking. Card payments suit clients who pay by credit card.
  • Support: Check how the provider or bank handles returned payments, name mismatches and purpose code corrections.

What documents and compliance apply to payments from Switzerland?

Money from a Swiss client for services is an export receipt under the FEMA (Export and Import of Goods and Services) Regulations, 2026, in force from 1 October 2026. You file an EDF, quote an export purpose code and realise the payment within nine months of the invoice date, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees.

  • FIRA or e-FIRA: FIRA is a document name used by banks and payment providers. The FEMA regulations do not define it. It records the inward payment. DGFT issues an e-BRC as confirmation that the exporter received payment.
  • Purpose code: Use the code that matches the service. Examples from the RBI purpose code list are P0802 Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form) and P1006 Business and management consultancy and public relations services. See P0802.
  • EDF for services: Under Regulation 3(2), a services exporter files an EDF within 30 days from the end of the invoice month. One EDF can cover all exports in a month. The EDF replaces SOFTEX for software from 1 October 2026 under A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20. See EDF form.
  • EDF for goods: A goods exporter files the EDF at the time of export. For EDI ports it is deemed submitted with the shipping bill under Regulation 3(1).
  • EDPMS: Your AD bank closes the EDPMS entry when payment arrives. For invoices up to Rs 10 lakh, the entry may close on your declaration under Regulation 4(2). See EDPMS closure.
  • PA-CB fund safety: A non-bank payment aggregator must hold merchant funds in an escrow account with a scheduled commercial bank in India, called an Inward Collection Account for inward payments, under paragraph 16 of the RBI Master Direction.

What tax applies to money received from Switzerland?

Services you supply to a Swiss business client are usually an export of services under section 2(6) of the IGST Act and zero-rated under section 16. You can supply without paying IGST by filing an LUT. The income is taxable in India, and the India-Switzerland tax treaty limits Swiss tax on fees for technical services.

  • GST and LUT: File a Letter of Undertaking in FORM GST RFD-11 before you export under CGST Rule 96A. Payment must arrive in convertible foreign exchange, or in rupees where RBI permits, for the supply to count as an export. See LUT filing.
  • GST on fees: Currency conversion by an Indian bank or provider is a taxable supply. Its value is calculated under CGST Rule 32(2). The GST appears on the provider's charges to you.
  • Income tax: The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. Presumptive taxation formerly in sections 44AD and 44ADA now sits in section 58. Tax Year 2026-27 is the first year under the new Act. See section 44ADA.
  • India-Switzerland DTAA: Under Article 7 of the India-Switzerland tax treaty, business profits are taxed only in India unless you have a permanent establishment in Switzerland. Article 12 allows Switzerland to tax fees for technical services under its own law, capped at 10% of the gross amount. Article 14 covers independent personal services.
  • Client side: A Swiss client may owe Swiss VAT on your services as acquisition tax under Article 45 of the Swiss VAT Act. This applies if the client is VAT-registered or buys such services for more than CHF 10,000 in a calendar year. The standard Swiss VAT rate is 8.1%.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Swiss client pay an Indian bank account by Swiss instant payment?

No, a Swiss instant payment only moves money to another bank account in Switzerland. SIX describes instant payments as transfers to another bank customer account in Switzerland within 10 seconds. To pay an Indian bank account, the Swiss client sends a SWIFT international transfer or pays Swiss account details held by a provider.

Can a Swiss client pay in euros through SEPA instead of Swiss francs?

Yes. Switzerland takes part in the SEPA schemes, so a Swiss client can send euros by SEPA credit transfer to a euro IBAN in the SEPA area. India is outside SEPA. A SEPA payment therefore needs euro account details located in Europe, and the euros are converted to rupees in a later step.

Which purpose code applies to software work paid from Switzerland?

Software consultancy paid by a Swiss client usually uses P0802, described in the RBI purpose code list as Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form). Business and management consultancy uses P1006. Choose the code that matches your invoice, and tell your bank or provider before the payment is converted. See P0802.

How long do you have to receive payment from a Swiss client under FEMA 2026?

Under Regulation 5 of the FEMA 2026 regulations, you must realise the full export value within nine months from the invoice date for services. The period is twelve months if the export is invoiced or settled in Indian rupees. Your AD bank can extend the period on request.

Do you need an EDF for every invoice sent to a Swiss client?

No, a single EDF can cover all services exported to one or more recipients in a month under Regulation 3(2). You file it within 30 days from the end of the invoice month. Exporters of services other than software may file on or before the payment date. See EDF form.

Does a Swiss client pay Swiss VAT on services from India?

A Swiss client may owe Swiss VAT itself as acquisition tax under Article 45 of the Swiss VAT Act. This applies to services from foreign businesses not entered in the Swiss VAT register. The client is liable if VAT-registered in Switzerland or if such purchases exceed CHF 10,000 in a calendar year.

Can Switzerland tax fees for technical services paid to an Indian freelancer?

Under Article 12 of the India-Switzerland DTAA, Switzerland may tax fees for technical services arising there under its own law, at up to 10% of the gross amount. The term covers managerial, technical or consultancy services. Payments for independent personal services under Article 14 are excluded. Ask your client whether any Swiss tax is withheld.

Is GST charged on an invoice to a client in Switzerland?

No IGST is charged when the supply meets the export conditions in section 2(6) of the IGST Act and you have filed an LUT under CGST Rule 96A. Without an LUT or bond, ask your tax adviser how IGST and any refund apply. The supply is zero-rated under section 16.

Can Swiss francs from Switzerland be kept in an EEFC account?

Yes. A person resident in India may credit 100 percent of eligible foreign exchange earnings to an EEFC account under the FEMA foreign currency account regulations. You can withdraw the francs in rupees at any time, but rupees withdrawn cannot be re-credited. See EEFC account benefits.

How quickly should an Indian bank credit a CHF wire from Switzerland?

RBI has asked banks to endeavour to credit inward payments received during forex market hours on the same business day under its April 2026 circular on faster inward payments. Payments received after market hours should be credited on the next business day. The direction takes effect six months from 9 April 2026.

Is there a transaction limit for card payments from Switzerland to India?

Yes. A PA-CB can process inward transactions of up to Rs 25 lakh per transaction under paragraph 11 of the RBI Master Direction on Payment Aggregators. Larger invoices from a Swiss client usually go by bank transfer. See PA-CB transaction limits.

Does the India-Switzerland DTAA stop double taxation of freelance income?

The India-Switzerland DTAA signed on 2 November 1994 says business profits are taxed only in India without a permanent establishment in Switzerland. Independent personal services can be taxed in Switzerland only with a fixed base there or a stay of 183 days or more. See DTAA for exporters.
