Short answer

You can receive NZD in India through local New Zealand account details paid by domestic online banking, a SWIFT wire to your Indian bank, or a card or online checkout. Personal remittance apps do not accept trade payments. On NZD 5,000, Razorpay pays the most of the platforms with full published pricing for NZD: about ₹2,63,726 on 3 Nov 2026.

Who this is for: This page is for Indian freelancers, agencies and registered exporters who invoice clients in New Zealand dollars and want the NZD converted to rupees in an Indian bank account.

Which platforms are best for receiving NZD in India?

The table ranks platforms with full published pricing for NZD by the INR received on NZD 5,000, then lists other business platforms that accept NZD, unranked. Fees were checked on 30 Sept 2026 or later.

What is the real NZD to INR rate you receive?

The real NZD rate is the rupee amount you receive after all margins. The mid-market rate has no margin. Banks pay a lower TT buying rate, and cards and platforms add a markup. For example, if the mid-market rate were Rs 52.00 and you got Rs 51.40, that example markup is about 1.2%. See what an FX markup is.

Today's rate, its history and every platform's payout are on the NZD to INR rate page.

How much INR do you receive on NZD 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000?

Each row applies the platform's published fee, FX markup and 18% GST on the fee to the mid-market rate of ₹53.38 per NZD for 3 Nov 2026.

Can you hold NZD in India?

Indian residents can hold NZD export earnings in an Exchange Earner's Foreign Currency (EEFC) account with an AD bank. Up to 100% of export and professional earnings can be credited under RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts, paragraph 3.1. The account pays no interest. Check whether your bank offers NZD.

  • Who qualifies: A person resident in India receiving foreign exchange earnings through normal banking channels, including exporters and professionals earning fees in an individual capacity, under paragraph 3.1.
  • Conversion rule: The Master Direction says the month's accruals should be converted into rupees by the last day of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Ask your AD bank how it applies paragraph 3.1(6).
  • Uses: Balances can pay for permitted current and capital account transactions abroad, so NZD can settle NZD costs. Credit facilities against EEFC balances are not allowed under paragraph 3.1(7).
  • Alternatives: Some providers of local NZD details may let you keep an NZD balance before payout. Ask how the balance is held, and remember the rupee credit in India still needs export documents.

When should you convert NZD to INR?

  • Spot: Convert each NZD receipt at the rate on the day it arrives. This is simple and suits small, regular invoices.
  • Forward contract: Fix an NZD to INR rate today for a future receipt with your AD bank. The contract's amount and tenor cannot exceed the value and tenor of the export exposure under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings, paragraph 2.4. Ask your bank whether it quotes NZD/INR forwards.
  • Limit order: Ask your bank or provider whether it can convert automatically when NZD reaches a rate you set, and what happens if the rate is never reached.
  • Natural hedge: Keep NZD in an EEFC account and use it for NZD expenses such as New Zealand software, subcontractors or travel, so less needs converting.

What documents and compliance apply to NZD receipts?

An NZD export receipt follows the same rules as any foreign currency receipt. Payments from New Zealand, outside the Asian Clearing Union, may be in any foreign currency under FEMA Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations, 2023. You need a purpose code, proof of receipt and, for services, an EDF.

  • Purpose code: Each inward remittance carries an RBI purpose code from the FETERS purpose code list. For example, P0802 is "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)".
  • EDF: From 1 October 2026, service exporters file an Export Declaration Form within 30 days from the end of the invoice month under Regulation 3(2) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. Exporters of services other than software may file it on or before the payment date. The EDF replaces SOFTEX, as A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars.
  • Realisation: Export value must be realised within nine months of the invoice date, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees, under Regulation 5 as amended on 22 September 2026. Your AD bank may extend this.
  • FIRA: FIRA is not a term defined in FEMA or the 2026 Regulations. It is a bank or provider advice confirming the credit, and you keep it as proof of export receipt.
  • PA-CB safety: Card and online checkout providers must be RBI-authorised PA-CBs. They hold export proceeds in a separate Inward Collection Account per currency, with a Rs 25 lakh cap per transaction, under RBI Master Direction on Payment Aggregators, paragraphs 11 and 16.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian freelancer receive NZD from a New Zealand client without a New Zealand bank account?

Yes. An Indian freelancer can give the New Zealand client local NZD account details from a provider, or ask for a SWIFT wire to an Indian bank. For local details, the client pays a domestic direct credit that clears through BECS. For a wire, the client enters your bank's SWIFT/BIC and account number.

What do the bank and branch numbers in an NZD account number mean?

The first two digits of a New Zealand account number are the bank number, which shows the bank holding the account. The next four digits are the branch number. Payments NZ publishes these in its Bank Branch Register. A client paying NZD by domestic transfer needs this full account number.

Can NZD direct credits be paid on weekends in New Zealand?

Yes. Payments NZ says New Zealand moved to 7-day bank-to-bank digital payments in 2023, so direct credits and bill payments can be made every day of the year. That covers only the domestic NZD leg. The rupee credit in India depends on when the provider converts NZD and pays your Indian bank.

Will a New Zealand client deduct NRCT from an NZD invoice?

Usually not if you work only from India. Inland Revenue says a contractor providing services from outside New Zealand with no presence there is not a non-resident contractor. For work done in New Zealand, payers may deduct tax, using 15% where no specific rate applies, unless an exemption applies, such as total payments of NZ$15,000 or less in 12 months.

Which purpose code applies to NZD payments for software or IT services?

NZD payments for software or IT services often use P0802, described as "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)" in the RBI purpose code list. Other services use their own codes, such as P1006 for business and management consultancy. The currency does not change the purpose code.

Can NZD be received through a remittance app as payment for export services?

No. Remittance apps that pay out under the Money Transfer Service Scheme can carry only personal inward remittances. The RBI Master Direction on MTSS bars trade related remittances and caps each remittance at USD 2,500. NZD export income should come through a bank or an RBI-authorised provider.

Do NZD export invoices need GST if a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) is filed?

No IGST is payable on NZD export invoices supplied under a Letter of Undertaking under Rule 96A. Export of services is zero-rated under IGST Act section 16. One condition in section 2(6) is payment in convertible foreign exchange, and NZD meets that test.

How long can NZD export proceeds stay unrealised under FEMA in 2026?

NZD export proceeds for services must be realised within nine months from the invoice date. For goods, the nine months run from the shipment date. This follows Regulation 5 of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, as amended in September 2026. Your AD bank may extend the period.
