Short answer
Toptal pays its talent in US dollars and handles client billing itself. You choose a payout method in the Toptal talent portal, then the money reaches your Indian bank directly or through a payment account. The marketplace does not publish full fees for its withdrawal methods, so no payout is calculated.

How does each Toptal withdrawal method work?
How does Bank transfer option in the Toptal talent portal work for Toptal payouts?
Toptal's public pages do not list payout methods or their terms, and its help centre could not be opened without signing in. Sign in, open the payment settings and check whether a bank transfer to India is offered and on what terms.
- Pros: Your own AD bank handles the inward remittance and its paperwork; No third-party account sits between Toptal and your bank; Toptal states payment is in USD, so the amount is clear before conversion
- Cons: Fees, timing and minimums are not published on Toptal's public pages; Intermediary banks may deduct charges on a cross-border transfer; The bank's conversion rate may differ from the mid-market rate
- Cost: Not published on Toptal's public pages. Toptal's talent FAQ says only that payment is in USD. Your Indian bank may charge an inward remittance fee.
- Time: Not published on Toptal's public pages. Check the payout schedule shown in your Toptal account.
- FIRA: Your receiving Indian bank issues the inward remittance advice or certificate for the credit. Ask it which document it gives.
- Ideal for: Freelancers who want their own bank to issue the remittance record and who can get a fair conversion rate from that bank.
How does Third-party payment account option in the Toptal talent portal work for Toptal payouts?
If your Toptal account lists a third-party payment account, you link it in your payment settings. Toptal pays US dollars into it, and you later withdraw rupees to your Indian bank.
- Pros: Can hold US dollars until you choose to withdraw; Useful as a second payout method; Provider may offer its own remittance document
- Cons: Two sets of terms apply, Toptal's and the provider's; Conversion markup is set by the provider; Toptal's public pages do not confirm which providers are available in India
- Cost: Not published on Toptal's public pages. The payment account provider sets its own receiving, conversion and bank withdrawal fees.
- Time: Not published by Toptal. Timing has two legs, from Toptal to the account, then from the account to your Indian bank.
- FIRA: Ask the payment account provider and your bank which remittance document covers the rupee credit, and whether it shows a purpose code.
- Ideal for: Freelancers who receive from several platforms into one payment account.
How do you set up Toptal withdrawals to India?
- Complete Toptal's screening and sign the talent agreement, since Toptal enters into talent agreements with every network member, per its client FAQ.
- Agree your hourly rate and engagement type (full-time, part-time or hourly) with Toptal. Toptal says talent set their own rate.
- Sign in to the Toptal talent portal and open the payment settings. Toptal's public pages do not list payout methods, so check the options shown in your account.
- Add a payout method in the same name as your Toptal profile and your Indian bank account, using the bank's SWIFT code and account number if you choose a bank transfer.
- Complete any tax form Toptal asks for. The IRS says a foreign person gives Form W-8BEN to the payer when the payer requests it.
- Log your hours or confirm your engagement time as Toptal requires, since Toptal bills the client and pays you in US dollars.
- After each payout reaches your bank, ask the bank for the inward remittance advice and confirm the purpose code it reported.
- If you are registered for GST, keep an LUT in place. As an exporter of services, file the EDF with your AD bank within 30 days from the end of the invoice month, whether or not you hold GST registration.
How much INR do you receive on $2,000, $5,000 and $10,000 from Toptal?
Toptal does not publish full fees for its withdrawal methods, so INR amounts are not calculated. The methods table above lists every fee it does publish.
What fees does Toptal charge before you withdraw?
Toptal says it does not take a cut of talent earnings, per its talent FAQ. Talent set their own hourly rate and Toptal handles client billing. For example, 20 hours in a week at $40 per hour is $800 earned, before any payout, intermediary bank or conversion charges.
What tax forms and TDS apply to Toptal earnings?
Toptal's public pages do not describe its tax interview or any Indian TDS on payouts. Toptal says it pays talent in US dollars and charges no cut, so there is no commission for GST to apply to. Your Toptal income is taxed in India, and a registered freelancer can export under an LUT.
- W-8BEN: If Toptal asks for a US tax form, the IRS says a foreign person gives Form W-8BEN to the payer when asked. Fill in the form Toptal requests in the talent portal, in the same name as your payout account. See W-8BEN for Indian freelancers.
- TDS: Toptal's public pages say nothing about withholding Indian TDS on talent payouts. Check each payout statement and your tax credit statement on the income tax e-filing portal. If no tax was withheld, plan advance tax yourself. See TDS on marketplace payouts.
- GST on fees: Toptal says it does not take a cut of talent earnings, so there is no Toptal commission on which GST could be charged. A payment account provider or your bank may charge fees, and GST can apply to those charges. See GST on platform charges.
- GST on exports: Toptal signs talent agreements and invoices clients itself, so your recipient may be the Toptal entity named in your talent agreement rather than the end client. Check that entity is located outside India. A service is an export when the five conditions in IGST Act section 2(6) are met, and exports are zero-rated under section 16. Registered freelancers file an LUT in Form GST RFD-11 under CGST Rule 96A. See LUT filing.
- Income tax: The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. The presumptive scheme for professionals under old section 44ADA now sits in section 58 of the 2025 Act. Tax years before 1 April 2026 stay under the 1961 Act. Check whether your Toptal work qualifies before using section 58. See section 44ADA for freelancers.
Do Toptal payouts give you FIRA, and what purpose code applies?
- FIRA by method: Toptal is not your bank and its public pages do not mention FIRA. For a bank transfer, your receiving Indian bank issues the inward remittance advice. For a payment account, ask the provider and your bank which document covers the rupee credit. FIRA is a common name for this record, not a term defined in the FEMA regulations. See FIRC vs FIRA vs e-BRC.
- Purpose code: Your AD bank reports each receipt with a purpose code from the RBI purpose code list. Software work often fits P0802 "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)". Consulting fits P1006 "Business and management consultancy and public relations services". Toptal publishes no fixed purpose code, so tell the bank which applies. See purpose code for freelancers.
- EDF and SOFTEX: Under Regulation 3(2) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, services exporters file an EDF within 30 days from the end of the invoice month. Exporters of services other than software may file it on or before the date of receipt of payment. The EDF replaced SOFTEX from 1 October 2026, when A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars. See EDF for exports.
- Realisation: Regulation 5, as amended on 22 September 2026, requires services export value to be realised within nine months from the invoice date, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees. Your AD bank can extend this on request. EDPMS entries for invoices up to Rs 10 lakh can be closed on your declaration. See export realisation period.
Why do Toptal withdrawals to India fail or get held?
- Payout delayed: Check that your hours or engagement time were logged and approved for the billing period. Toptal's public pages do not publish its payout schedule to talent. Its client FAQ says it typically invoices clients twice a month on Net 10 terms. Then contact Toptal support from the talent portal.
- Name mismatch: Use a bank account or payment account held in exactly the same name as your Toptal profile and tax form. A mismatch can make the bank or provider reject or hold the credit. Fix the profile or add a correctly named account before the next payout.
- Returned transfer: A wrong SWIFT code, account number or beneficiary name can send a transfer back. Intermediary and return charges may be lost on the way. Confirm the details with your Indian bank, update the payout method in the Toptal portal and ask Toptal support to resend.
- Bank query: Your AD bank may hold a foreign credit until you explain its purpose. Reply with your Toptal talent agreement, the payout statement and the matching purpose code. Keep the EDF reference for that month ready as well.

Frequently asked questions
Does Toptal take a commission from freelancer earnings in India?
No. Toptal's talent FAQ says talent members set their own rates and Toptal does not take a cut. Clients pay Toptal, and Toptal pays you in US dollars. Payment providers, intermediary banks or your Indian bank may still charge their own fees when the money reaches India.
Which currency does Toptal use to pay freelancers in India?
Toptal says payment to talent is in US dollars, and that the payment process is automated, with Toptal handling billing and invoicing with clients. Your rupee amount therefore depends on who converts the dollars, either your Indian bank or a payment account provider, and the rate that converter uses.
Where can Indian freelancers find Toptal's payout methods and fees?
Toptal's public FAQ pages do not list payout methods, payout fees or minimums for Indian freelancers. Toptal's help centre could not be opened without signing in. Sign in to the Toptal talent portal, open your payment settings and record the fees, timing and minimum shown there for each method before choosing one.
How often does Toptal bill clients for freelancer work?
Toptal's client FAQ says it typically invoices clients twice a month on Net 10 terms. Clients can pay by major credit cards, ACH, bank wires or PayPal. Freelancers do not invoice the client directly, since Toptal manages billing, so payouts follow Toptal's own cycle.
Is Toptal income an export of services for GST in India?
Often yes. Toptal contracts with talent and bills clients itself, so the recipient may be the Toptal entity in your talent agreement. Your service is an export when all five conditions in IGST Act section 2(6) are met, including a recipient outside India and payment in convertible foreign exchange. Registered freelancers can then supply under an LUT.
Which RBI purpose code fits Toptal payments for software developers?
Software development work often fits P0802, which the RBI list describes as "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)". P0807 covers "Off site software exports". Toptal publishes no fixed code, so tell your bank which matches your Toptal engagement. See P0802 purpose code for details.
Do Toptal freelancers in India need to file an EDF from October 2026?
Yes. An exporter of services files an EDF within 30 days from the end of the invoice month under Regulation 3(2) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. One EDF can cover all exports in a month. GST registration does not change this. Ask your AD bank how it applies this to Toptal payouts.
Can Toptal freelancers in India use the section 44ADA presumptive scheme?
Section 44ADA was the presumptive scheme for specified professionals under the 1961 Act, and it still governs tax years before 1 April 2026. From that date the Income-tax Act, 2025 consolidates it into section 58. Whether Toptal income qualifies depends on your profession and receipts, so check the conditions or ask a chartered accountant.
