Short answer

You can withdraw Udemy earnings to India through PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti, which offers an INR bank deposit or a wire. Udemy pays monthly once at least $25 is due, about two months after the sale month. The marketplace does not publish full fees for its withdrawal methods, so no payout is calculated.

Who this is for: This page is for Indian course creators, from individual instructors to GST-registered businesses, who sell courses on Udemy as premium instructors and want their earnings in an Indian bank account.

What withdrawal methods does Udemy support for India?

How does each Udemy withdrawal method work?

How does PayPal work for Udemy payouts?

Open Payout settings from your profile menu, click Log In next to PayPal and authenticate on PayPal's site to link it to your Udemy profile. Approval can take up to three days, and the status then changes from Pending to Active.

  • Pros: No Udemy fee on the payout; You can change the linked PayPal account yourself by logging in again; Can be chosen during the premium instructor application
  • Cons: Funds reach PayPal first, then move to your Indian bank as a separate step; PayPal fees and conversion rates are not shown on Udemy's pages; A PayPal account that is not verified to receive payments causes failed payouts
  • Cost: $0 from Udemy, which does not charge transactional fees when delivering payment to instructors, per the premium instructor guide. PayPal lists its own fees on its site, per the Udemy PayPal and Payoneer setup guide.
  • Time: Udemy typically sends payouts within the first 10 business days of the payment month. You then transfer from PayPal to your bank.
  • FIRA: Udemy does not issue one. Ask PayPal what inward remittance record it provides for the transfer to your Indian bank.
  • Ideal for: Instructors with small or irregular monthly earnings who already use PayPal for other income.

How does Payoneer work for Udemy payouts?

Click Connect next to Payoneer on Payout settings, choose the Bank Transfers option and enter your Indian bank details. Existing users select Already have a Payoneer Account. Approval usually takes no more than three business days, after which Udemy pays into Payoneer and you withdraw to your bank.

  • Pros: No Udemy fee on the payout; Local bank transfer takes about 1 to 3 business days after you withdraw; Pricing is shown before you submit the application
  • Cons: Withdrawing to your bank is a second step with Payoneer's own charges; Changing the linked Payoneer account requires contacting Payoneer; Payoneer may ask for ID, a bank statement or other documents
  • Cost: $0 from Udemy. Payoneer shows its fees during registration and later under Pricing & Fees in your Payoneer account, per the Udemy Payoneer FAQ.
  • Time: Udemy pays monthly to your Payoneer account. A local bank transfer then takes about 1 to 3 business days after you request the withdrawal.
  • FIRA: Udemy does not issue one. Ask Payoneer what remittance record comes with the credit to your Indian bank.
  • Ideal for: Instructors who collect from Udemy and other platforms and want one balance before transferring to India.

How does Tipalti, Direct Deposit/ACH (INR) work for Udemy payouts?

Go to Payout & Tax Settings, select Tipalti, enter your address, choose Direct Deposit/ACH and fill in the bank details of an account in your own name. The fees appear at the bottom of the second setup step.

  • Pros: Paid into your Indian bank account in INR; No wallet balance to move afterwards; Fees are shown before you finish setup
  • Cons: Udemy describes Tipalti as available to eligible instructors in select countries, so confirm it appears for your account; Your tax information may need to be re-verified when you switch; Udemy Support cannot see Tipalti's system, so bank detail and transfer problems go to Tipalti Support
  • Cost: $0 from Udemy. Tipalti transaction and FX fees appear on screen during setup, once you enter your bank details, per the Udemy Tipalti setup guide.
  • Time: T+2 to T+3 for INR to India, per Udemy's Global ACH country table
  • FIRA: Udemy does not issue one. Ask Tipalti and your bank what inward remittance record they provide for the INR credit.
  • Ideal for: Instructors who want a direct rupee credit without managing a separate wallet.

How does Tipalti, Wire Transfer work for Udemy payouts?

Select Tipalti in Payout & Tax Settings, choose Wire Transfer, set the currency in the Payment Currency dropdown that appears and enter the bank details of an account in your own name. Review the fees shown before you finish.

  • Pros: You choose the payment currency; Arrives at your Indian bank as a foreign inward remittance; Fees are shown during setup
  • Cons: Udemy advises confirming receiving fees with your bank; Transfer times are in Tipalti's documentation, not on Udemy's pages; Your tax information may need to be re-verified when you switch
  • Cost: $0 from Udemy. Tipalti shows its transaction and FX fees during setup, per the Udemy Tipalti setup guide. Your bank may charge receiving fees.
  • Time: Udemy refers instructors to Tipalti's documentation for wire transfer times
  • FIRA: A foreign currency wire reaches your Indian bank as an inward remittance, so your AD bank may be able to issue a remittance certificate or advice. Check with your AD bank.
  • Ideal for: Registered exporters who want a bank-issued remittance record for their GST and EDF paperwork.

How do you set up Udemy withdrawals to India?

  1. Create a course, open Pricing on the course management page and follow the link there to start the premium instructor application.
  2. Enter your name or company name, a 60 character headline, a short bio and a profile picture, then accept the terms and choose your promotional programs.
  3. Select a payout method: PayPal, Payoneer or Tipalti. Direct deposit is for the United States only.
  4. For PayPal or Payoneer, open Payout settings from your profile menu and click Log In or Connect. For Tipalti, open Payout & Tax Settings and enter the details of a bank account in your own name.
  5. Wait until the payout method shows Active, which can take up to three days, then return to your course and set its price.
  6. Once you earn revenue, click Submit tax documentation on Payout settings and complete the W-8BEN, entering your Indian tax identification number and any treaty claim.
  7. Check that Withholding Tax Status changes to Active, usually within 2 to 3 business days, because payouts are suspended without a valid tax form.
  8. Track each payment on the Payout Report. Payments are typically sent within the first 10 business days of the payment month.

How much INR do you receive on $2,000, $5,000 and $10,000 from Udemy?

Udemy does not publish full fees for its withdrawal methods, so INR amounts are not calculated. The methods table above lists every fee it does publish.

What fees does Udemy charge before you withdraw?

Udemy keeps 63% of the Net Amount on marketplace sales, because instructors receive 37%, and 3% on sales made through an instructor coupon or referral link, per the Udemy revenue share page. The Net Amount excludes taxes and app store fees. For example, a $100 Net Amount sale pays you $37 organically or $97 through your coupon.

What tax forms and TDS apply to Udemy earnings?

Udemy asks earning instructors to submit a US tax form through its secure portal, and the W-8BEN is the usual form for non-US individuals, per Udemy W-8BEN guidance. Udemy withholds US tax only on sales to US students, at 30% by default. A valid treaty claim on the form can reduce that rate.

  • W-8BEN: Udemy treats instructor earnings as copyright royalties and says you must claim treaty benefits on the form to get a reduced rate, per Udemy W-8BEN guidance. Article 12 of the India-US tax treaty caps US tax on copyright royalties paid to an Indian resident at 15 percent of the gross amount. See W-8BEN for Indian freelancers.
  • Form 1042-S: Instructors who filed a W-8BEN receive Form 1042-S by mid-March for the previous year if they had US-sourced earnings, per Udemy tax documents. It shows US-sourced payouts and any tax withheld, and you download it from Payout & Tax Settings. If no valid form is on file at payout time, payment is suspended, per the withholding status FAQ.
  • India TDS: Udemy says it must withhold Indian tax from payouts to India-resident instructors, citing "Section 192-O" on its India withholding FAQ. Until its automated system is ready, Udemy pays this tax to the authorities itself and does not deduct it from payouts. Payouts are reported against the Tax ID you gave and appear in Form 26AS. See TDS on marketplace payouts.
  • GST on fees: Udemy collects VAT or GST from students on purchases where local rules apply, and Apple and Google handle tax on mobile purchases, per its VAT and GST page. Udemy's pages do not say how Indian GST applies to the share Udemy keeps, so check this with your tax advisor.
  • Export GST: Services that meet all five conditions in IGST Act section 2(6) are exports and are zero-rated under section 16. A registered instructor files an LUT under CGST Rule 96A to export without paying IGST. Whether your Udemy income meets the conditions depends on your arrangement, so confirm with your tax advisor. See LUT filing.
  • Income tax: Udemy income of an India-resident instructor is taxed in India. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026, and the old section 44AD and 44ADA presumptive schemes now sit in section 58, for instructors who are eligible. Under Article 25 of the India-US tax treaty, India allows a deduction for US tax paid, up to the Indian tax on that income. See foreign tax credit.

Do Udemy payouts give you FIRA, and what purpose code applies?

  • FIRA term: FIRA is a term used by banks and payment providers and is not defined in the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. Udemy's payout pages do not mention a FIRA or FIRC, and Udemy says your payment provider is the most reliable record of amounts received from Udemy. See FIRC vs FIRA vs e-BRC.
  • By method: A Tipalti wire reaches your Indian bank as a foreign inward remittance, so your AD bank may be able to issue a remittance certificate or advice. For PayPal, Payoneer and the Tipalti INR deposit, ask the provider and your bank what record they supply, since Udemy's pages do not say.
  • Purpose code: Udemy describes instructor earnings as copyright royalties. The RBI purpose code list describes P0902 as "Receipts for use, through licensing arrangements, of produced originals or prototypes (such as manuscripts and films), patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial processes, franchises etc." Ask your AD bank which code it applies. See purpose code for freelancers.
  • EDF: Under Regulation 3 of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, in force from 1 October 2026, services exporters file an EDF within 30 days of the end of the invoice month. It replaced SOFTEX, per A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20. Realisation is due within nine months, per the 22 September 2026 amendment. Ask your AD bank how this applies to Udemy payouts. See EDF form for exports.

Why do Udemy withdrawals to India fail or get held?

  • Payout suspended: Udemy suspends a payout when no valid tax form is on file at payout time, per the withholding status FAQ. Submit or renew your tax documentation on Payout settings and wait for Withholding Tax Status to show Active, which usually takes 2 to 3 business days, per the tax form submission guide.
  • Failed payout: For a Failed or Blocked payout, Udemy asks you to check that a payout method is set up and that your PayPal or Payoneer account is verified to receive payments, per the Payout Report guide. Fix the account with the provider, then contact Udemy Support and name the monthly payments you have not received.
  • Name mismatch: Tipalti payouts must go to a bank account in your own name, and errors in bank details can delay or fail payouts, per the Udemy Tipalti FAQ. Correct the details in Tipalti and contact Tipalti Support, since Udemy Support cannot access Tipalti's system.
  • Below $25: Udemy issues a payment only when the cumulative amount payable reaches $25, per the instructor payment overview. Smaller balances carry forward and any remainder under $25 is paid in December, so a missing payment in a slow month is expected.
  • Wrong Tax ID: Udemy reports payouts to Indian tax authorities against the Tax ID you entered. To fix an old error, update it in the Udemy Tax Portal under Payout and Tax Settings and tell Instructor Support, per the India withholding FAQ. Corrections usually take about a month to reach Form 26AS.

Frequently asked questions

When does Udemy pay instructors for a course sale?

Udemy pays for a sale in the third month. Sales happen in month one, Udemy processes refunds and adjustments in months one and two, and pays in month three. Payments are typically sent within the first 10 business days of that month. Expected payment dates appear on the Udemy Revenue Report.

Does Udemy charge Indian instructors a fee to send payouts?

Udemy does not charge transactional fees when delivering payment to instructors, and becoming a premium instructor is free. Udemy keeps its revenue share instead. PayPal, Payoneer and Tipalti may charge their own transfer or FX fees, which Udemy says you can review on their sites or during setup.

How much US tax does Udemy withhold from an Indian instructor?

Udemy withholds US tax only on earnings from US students, at 30% by default. An Indian instructor who makes a valid treaty claim on the W-8BEN can get a lower rate, since the India-US treaty caps tax on copyright royalties at 15 percent. Udemy shows the rate in your revenue report.

Does Udemy deduct Indian TDS from instructor payouts in 2026?

Udemy says Indian law requires it to withhold tax from payouts to India-resident instructors. Until its automated system is ready, Udemy pays the tax to the authorities itself and does not deduct it from Udemy payouts. The amounts are reported against your Tax ID and appear in Form 26AS.

How are Udemy Business earnings calculated for instructors?

Udemy sets aside 15% of monthly Udemy Business subscription revenue as an instructor pool. Each instructor's share equals their share of total minutes consumed in Udemy Business courses. That revenue appears in your Udemy revenue report after seven business days of the following month. Check expected payment dates on the same report.

Can a Udemy instructor in India switch between PayPal, Payoneer and Tipalti?

A Udemy instructor can connect PayPal and Payoneer and pick the active one at any time with the Set Active link on Payout settings. Tipalti is set up or switched in Payout & Tax Settings where available. Switching to Tipalti may require your tax information to be re-verified.

What happens to Udemy earnings below the $25 payout minimum?

Udemy holds earnings until the cumulative amount payable reaches $25, because of transaction fees. Once the balance crosses $25 the payment is issued in the normal monthly cycle. Any Udemy balance still under $25 is paid to instructors in December, so small earnings are not lost.

Which Udemy Payout Report statuses mean a payment is on the way?

Success means Udemy sent the payout, though your bank or provider may take extra time. Processing should update within 3 business days, Ready to Pay within 5 and Queuing within 10. Failed, Blocked and Unpaid need action, and Udemy emails you when a payout fails.
