Can you hold SEK in India?

Yes, you can hold SEK in India in an EEFC account with an AD bank. A person resident in India can open one under FEMA 10(R), and professionals can credit consultancy and similar fees. The account pays no interest. Check that your bank offers Swedish krona EEFC balances, or convert on receipt.

  • Credits: Up to 100 percent of foreign exchange earnings received through the banking channel can go in, and card receipts reimbursed in foreign exchange count as banking channel receipts under Schedule I of FEMA 10(R).
  • Conversion: The Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts says a calendar month's accruals should be converted to rupees by the end of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Check how your AD bank applies this.
  • Interest: The EEFC account is non-interest bearing, and banks may not lend against the balance, as set out in the Master Direction.
  • Currency: Banks choose which currencies they hold in EEFC accounts. Ask your AD bank whether it keeps SEK balances, since some banks convert less common currencies into USD, EUR or another major currency.

When should you convert SEK to INR?

  • Spot: Convert kronor at the rate on the day they arrive. It is simple, and you accept whatever rate the market gives that day.
  • Forward contract: Fix a SEK to INR rate today for a future date. Under RBI's hedging directions, AD banks can offer forwards to retail users and allow hedging of contracted exposure up to USD 100 million equivalent without first proving it, though a real exposure must exist. See forward contracts for exporters.
  • Limit order: Ask your bank or provider to convert automatically when SEK to INR reaches a rate you set. Availability and minimum amounts vary, so confirm before relying on it.
  • Natural hedge: Pay Swedish krona costs, such as software subscriptions or travel booked in SEK, from EEFC balances so that part of your income is never converted. Payments outside India for permitted current account transactions are allowed debits under FEMA 10(R).

What documents and compliance apply to SEK receipts?

Receiving SEK for exports in India follows the same FEMA rules as any other currency. From 1 October 2026, service exporters generally file an EDF within 30 days of the end of the invoice month and realise proceeds within nine months under the FEMA 2026 Regulations. Your AD bank reports each receipt with a purpose code.

How did we verify this?

Frequently asked questions

Can a Swedish client pay SEK to an Indian bank account through Swish?

Not for business payments. Swish is a Swedish mobile payment service, and the Riksbank notes that companies cannot use Swish to pay another company. A Swedish business client usually pays local SEK account details held with a provider in Sweden, which then pays you in India, or sends a SWIFT wire.

What details does a Swedish client need to send SEK to India by SWIFT wire?

The client needs your name as it appears on the bank account, your account number, your Indian bank's SWIFT code and branch address, and an invoice reference. Ask the client to choose the OUR charge option so that the client pays the sending and intermediary charges, and keep the payment advice for your records.

Does the Swedish krona count as convertible foreign exchange for GST export of services?

Yes. The Swedish krona is a convertible foreign currency, so a SEK payment meets the payment condition in section 2(6) of the IGST Act. The other conditions still apply: you are in India, the client and the place of supply are outside India, and you are not establishments of the same person. With an LUT, no IGST is paid.

How long can a SEK export invoice stay unpaid under FEMA rules?

Under the FEMA 2026 Regulations, proceeds of a services export invoiced in SEK must be realised within nine months of the invoice date. Invoices raised or settled in INR get twelve months. Your AD bank can extend the period if you give reasons for the delay and it accepts them.

Can a Swedish client pay in EUR through SEPA instead of SEK?

Yes. Sweden is an EU member state in the SEPA area, so a Swedish client can send euros by SEPA credit transfer to a euro IBAN in Europe. India is outside SEPA, so this needs euro account details located in Europe, and the euros are converted to rupees later. See EUR payments.

Can a freelancer open an EEFC account to keep Swedish krona earnings?

Often yes. FEMA 10(R) allows any person resident in India to open an EEFC account, and it lists professional earnings such as consultancy fees as eligible credits. Ask your AD bank whether it opens EEFC accounts for individuals and whether it holds SEK balances, since both differ from bank to bank.

Which purpose code applies to SEK receipts for software development work?

The purpose code follows the service, so the currency does not change it. Software development is usually reported under P0802, which RBI describes as Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form), or P0807, Off site software exports. See P0802 vs P0807 and confirm the code with your AD bank.

Should an Indian exporter invoice a Swedish client in SEK or INR?

Both are allowed for clients outside the Asian Clearing Union under the Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations. Invoicing in SEK suits most Swedish clients but leaves you with the currency risk. Invoicing in INR moves that risk to the client and gives you twelve months to realise the payment.
