Descriptions as listed in RBI's FETERS purpose code list. Your AD bank confirms the code it reports.
What does the RBI Purpose Code Finder for Export Receipts calculate?
| Item | Type | What it means | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search keyword | Input | A word or phrase from your work, such as software, consultancy, advertising or education | Freelancers and exporters who do not know which code to quote |
| Group filter | Input | Goods export codes (P01xx) or services codes (P08xx to P11xx) | Exporters who want to narrow the list quickly |
| Purpose code | Output | The five-character FETERS code, for example P0802 | Anyone giving a purpose code to a bank for an inward remittance |
| Official description | Output | The wording of the code exactly as it appears in the RBI list | Matching the code to the nature of the service on the invoice |
| Group | Output | Whether the code sits in the goods export or the services part of the list | Checking that the code fits the type of export |
How is the RBI Purpose Code Finder for Export Receipts calculation done?
The finder compares your keyword with the official wording of each RBI purpose code and lists the codes whose description contains it. It does not decide which code applies. The code that fits depends on the nature of the transaction, so the result is a shortlist to check against the RBI list and your AD bank.
Matching codes = all FETERS receipt codes in the loaded list whose official description contains every word typed in the search box (case ignored)
For example, typing 'software' returns P0802 (Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)) and P0807 (Off-site Software Exports), and P0804 (Repair and maintenance of computer and software). The reader then reads each description and picks the one that matches the service on the invoice.
How do you use the RBI Purpose Code Finder for Export Receipts?
- Type a keyword that describes the service or goods you export, such as 'consultancy' or 'advertising'.
- Use the group filter if you want only goods export codes or only services codes.
- Read the official description of each result in full, not only the first words.
- Compare the description with the service named on your invoice and your agreement.
- Confirm the final code with your AD bank, which enters it in the reporting system.
What does your result mean?
A result means the keyword appears in the official wording of that code. It does not mean the code is correct for your transaction. Two or three results are normal, and the description matching the actual service is the one to quote. P1099, 'Other services not included elsewhere', is the residual code.
- One match: Read the full description and check the service on your invoice matches it.
- Several matches: Compare the descriptions. Codes such as P0802 and P0807 describe different arrangements of software work.
- No match: Try a broader word, or read the services section of the official list from top to bottom.
- Residual code: P1099 covers other services not included elsewhere. Use it only when no specific code describes the service.
What does the RBI Purpose Code Finder for Export Receipts assume, and what does it not cover?
- List used: Receipt codes in the current FETERS list issued with A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 84 of 29 February 2012. The wording is copied from the official PDF.
- Scope: Goods export receipt codes (P0101 to P0109) and services codes (P0801 to P1109). Other receipt codes, such as investment, loan and transfer codes, are not loaded.
- Not covered: The tool does not read your agreement and cannot confirm that a code is correct for GST, FEMA or tax purposes.
- Updates: RBI can revise the list. Check the date of the circular on the RBI site when you rely on a code.
What do people get wrong when calculating this?
- Quoting from memory: Codes are easy to confuse, for example P0802 and P0807. Read the description every time.
- Using the withdrawn list: Older lists that circulate online may be superseded. The current list is the one attached to Circular No. 84.
- Choosing by familiarity: A code used by another freelancer may describe a different service. The code follows the nature of your own transaction.
- Relying on a keyword only: A keyword match shows that a word appears. It does not show that the service falls in that category.
Which rules should you know about this?
RBI issues the purpose code list used for reporting foreign exchange transactions in FETERS. AD banks report the purpose code for each remittance, as the FETERS guidelines describe. The official list is attached to A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 84, and the PDF is here.

Frequently asked questions
Which RBI list does the purpose code finder search?
The purpose code finder searches the receipt codes in the FETERS guidelines issued by RBI with A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 84 dated 29 February 2012. The descriptions are copied from the official PDF. Only goods export and services receipt codes are loaded, so investment, loan and transfer codes do not appear in results.
Does the purpose code finder tell me which code to use?
No. The purpose code finder lists codes whose official wording contains the keyword typed. The correct code depends on the nature of the transaction, the agreement and the invoice. The AD bank enters the purpose code when it reports the remittance, so confirm the final choice with the bank handling the receipt.
Which purpose code appears for software consultancy in the finder?
A search for software shows P0802, 'Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)', and P0807, 'Off-site Software Exports', among others. SOFTEX was replaced by the export declaration form for software from 1 October 2026 under A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20.
What does purpose code P1099 mean in the RBI list?
P1099 reads 'Other services not included elsewhere' in the RBI list. It is the residual services code. It suits a service that no more specific code describes, and a specific code such as P1006 for business and management consultancy applies where it fits.
Can the purpose code finder be used for goods exports?
Yes, the finder includes the goods export receipt codes P0101 to P0109 from the FETERS list. These cover export bills, advance receipts, merchanting and exports to Nepal and Bhutan. A code is chosen by how the payment relates to the shipment, for example advance or realisation of a bill.
