How is the Stripe Fee for Indian Businesses calculation done?
The Stripe fee calculator converts the payment to INR at the mid-market rate. It deducts the processing fee of 4.3%, 3% or 3.5% and a 2% conversion fee when conversion is needed. It then deducts 18% GST on those fees. Processing fees on card payments worth up to INR 2,000 carry no GST.
INR payout = amount x rate x (1 - processing % - conversion %) - 18% GST x (processing fee + conversion fee), with GST on the processing fee set to zero when amount x rate is INR 2,000 or less
For example, a USD 1,000 card payment presented in USD at an example rate of 88.00 INR per USD is worth INR 88,000. The 4.3% processing fee is INR 3,784 and the 2% conversion fee is INR 1,760. GST of 18% on INR 5,544 of fees is INR 997.92. The estimated payout is INR 81,458.08, a total cost of 7.434%. A USD 20 payment (INR 1,760) pays GST only on the conversion fee, so its payout is INR 1,642.78.
How do you use the Stripe Fee Calculator for Indian Businesses?
- Enter the amount your customer will pay by card.
- Choose the currency the card is charged in. The calculator uses Stripe's published rate for international cards charged in a foreign currency, 4.3% plus 2% for conversion; cards charged in INR are not covered.
- Check the mid-market rate and its date shown under the result.
- Read the processing fee, conversion fee and GST lines.
- Compare the INR payout with the payment at the market rate to see the total cost.
What does your result mean?
The result shows the rupees Stripe pays out for one international card payment after its fees and GST. For a USD card payment above INR 2,000, the total cost is about 7.43% at Stripe's standard India rates. A Visa or Mastercard payment charged in INR has no Stripe conversion fee, so its cost is lower.
- INR payout: Stripe pays out in INR only, so every foreign currency payment is converted before payout.
- Small payments: Card payments worth up to INR 2,000 carry no GST on the processing fee, so their percentage cost is lower.
- INR pricing: When a foreign card is charged in INR, Stripe does not convert the payment, though the customer's issuing bank may charge the customer a conversion fee.
- GST credit: GST-registered businesses may recover the GST on the monthly Stripe tax invoice as input tax credit.
What does the Stripe Fee Calculator for Indian Businesses assume, and what does it not cover?
- Rates used: Stripe India standard pricing: 4.3% for international cards with USD or other currency presentment, 3% for Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside India, 3.5% for American Express cards issued outside India, each plus 2% if currency conversion is required. The calculator applies 4.3% plus 2% to any payment charged in a foreign currency, including American Express in USD, and 3% or 3.5% with no conversion fee to Visa, Mastercard or American Express payments charged in INR.
- Exchange rate: Stripe says it generally applies the mid-market rate from third-party data providers, and in certain circumstances may apply the rate at which it sources the currency.
- Taxes included: GST at 18% on Stripe fees, with no GST on processing fees for a single card transaction up to INR 2,000. The calculator treats the 2% conversion fee as always attracting GST.
- Not covered: Custom pricing, dispute fees, Billing and Invoicing fees, refunds, TDS credits and any charges by the customer's card issuer.
- Eligibility: A registered Indian sole proprietorship, LLP or company that has opted in to exports on an invite-only Stripe account.
What do people get wrong when calculating this?
- Leaving out 2%: A payment charged in USD or another foreign currency also pays the 2% conversion fee because Stripe pays out in INR.
- Ignoring GST: Stripe adds 18% GST on its fees and deducts it from the account balance during the month.
- Wrong card rate: American Express cards issued outside India and charged in INR cost 3.5%, which differs from the 3% Visa and Mastercard rate.
- Large payments: Stripe allows up to INR 25 lakh per export transaction, so larger amounts cannot be charged in one payment.
- Individual accounts: Stripe does not support international payments for individuals in India, so a registered business is needed before these fees apply.
Which rules should you know about this?
The Stripe fee rules come from the Stripe India pricing page, which sets the 4.3%, 3% and 3.5% card fees plus 2% for conversion. Stripe's India tax page adds 18% GST and exempts processing fees on cards up to INR 2,000. Stripe's export limits page caps each export transaction at INR 25 lakh.
