What is the real IDR to INR rate you receive?

The real IDR rate is the rupee amount you receive after all margins. The mid-market rate has no margin, and Bank Indonesia publishes a daily INR/IDR reference rate. Banks and platforms pay less. For example, at an example rate of Rp185 per rupee, a Rp10,000,000 invoice is worth about ₹54,054, and a 2% margin leaves about ₹52,973.

Today's rate, its history and every platform's payout are on the IDR to INR rate page.

How much INR do you receive on IDR 36,000,000, 91,000,000 and 180,000,000?

Can you hold IDR in India?

Indian residents can hold export earnings in an Exchange Earner's Foreign Currency (EEFC) account with an AD bank. Up to 100% of export and professional earnings can be credited under RBI Master Direction on Deposits and Accounts, paragraph 3.1. The account pays no interest. Ask your AD bank whether it offers an EEFC account in IDR.

  • Who qualifies: A person resident in India receiving foreign exchange earnings through normal banking channels, including exporters and professionals earning fees in an individual capacity, under paragraph 3.1.
  • Conversion rule: The Master Direction says the month's accruals should be converted into rupees by the last day of the next month, after adjusting for approved uses or forward commitments. Ask your AD bank how it applies paragraph 3.1(6).
  • Uses: Balances can pay for permitted current and capital account transactions abroad, so IDR could settle IDR costs. Credit facilities against EEFC balances are not allowed under paragraph 3.1(7).
  • Alternatives: If your bank does not hold IDR, a provider of local IDR details may let you keep a rupiah balance before payout. Ask how the balance is held. The rupee credit in India still needs export documents.

When should you convert IDR to INR?

  • Spot: Convert each IDR receipt at the rate on the day it arrives. This is simple and suits small, regular invoices.
  • Forward contract: Fix a rate today for a future receipt with your AD bank. The hedge cannot exceed the value or tenor of the export exposure under RBI Master Direction on Risk Management and Inter-Bank Dealings, paragraph 2.4. Ask your bank whether it quotes IDR forwards.
  • Limit order: Ask your bank or provider whether it can convert automatically when IDR reaches a rate you set, and what happens if the rate is never reached.
  • Natural hedge: Keep IDR where your bank or provider allows it and use it for IDR expenses such as Indonesian contractors, event fees or travel, so less needs converting. See what an EEFC account is.

What documents and compliance apply to IDR receipts?

An IDR export receipt follows the same rules as any foreign currency receipt. Indonesia is outside the Asian Clearing Union, so the FEMA Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations, 2023 allow payment in rupees or any foreign currency, including IDR. You need a purpose code, proof of receipt and an EDF for each export.

  • Purpose code: Each inward remittance carries an RBI purpose code from the FETERS purpose code list. For example, P0802 is "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)".
  • EDF: From 1 October 2026, service exporters file an Export Declaration Form within 30 days from the end of the invoice month under Regulation 3(2) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. Exporters of services other than software may file it on or before the payment date. The EDF replaces SOFTEX, as A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars.
  • Realisation: Export value must be realised within nine months, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees, under Regulation 5 as amended on 22 September 2026. Your AD bank may extend this. See export realisation period.
  • FIRA: FIRA is not a term defined in FEMA or the 2026 Regulations. It is a bank or provider advice confirming the credit, and you keep it as proof of export receipt. See what a FIRA is.
  • INR-IDR framework: RBI and Bank Indonesia signed an MoU on 7 March 2024 to promote INR and IDR in cross-border transactions, covering all current account transactions. Ask your AD bank whether it offers IDR settlement under this framework.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian freelancer receive IDR from an Indonesian client without an Indonesian bank account?

Yes. An Indian freelancer can give the Indonesian client local IDR account details from a provider, or ask for a SWIFT wire to an Indian bank. BI-FAST moves rupiah between Indonesian accounts in real time, 24/7, so the client pays an account at an Indonesian bank. With SWIFT, the client enters your bank's SWIFT/BIC and account number.

What does the RBI and Bank Indonesia MoU of March 2024 mean for IDR invoices?

The RBI press release of 7 March 2024 says the MoU sets up a framework to promote INR and IDR for cross-border transactions. It covers all current account transactions and aims to let exporters and importers invoice and pay in their domestic currencies. Ask your AD bank whether it handles IDR receipts under the framework.

Does Bank Indonesia publish an official INR to IDR reference rate?

Yes. Bank Indonesia publishes a daily Non-USD/IDR reference rate that includes INR, alongside currencies such as SGD, MYR and CNY. It shows how many rupiah one rupee buys. Use it as a benchmark when you check the rate your bank or provider applies to an IDR receipt. See what an FX markup is.

Which purpose code applies to IDR payments for software or IT services?

IDR payments for software or IT services often use P0802, described as "Software consultancy/implementation (other than those covered in SOFTEX form)" in the RBI purpose code list. Other services use their own codes, such as P1006 for business and management consultancy. The currency does not change the purpose code. See purpose codes for freelancers.

Can IDR be received through a remittance app as payment for export services?

No. Remittance apps that pay into India work under the Money Transfer Service Scheme, which allows only personal inward remittances. The RBI Master Direction on MTSS bars trade related remittances and caps each remittance at USD 2,500. IDR export income must come through a bank or another authorised channel.

Do IDR export invoices need GST if a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) is filed?

No IGST is payable on IDR export invoices supplied under a Letter of Undertaking under Rule 96A. Export of services is zero-rated under IGST Act section 16. One condition in section 2(6) is payment in convertible foreign exchange, or rupees where RBI permits. See LUT filing on the GST portal.

Does an Indonesian client deduct PPh Article 26 before paying an IDR invoice?

It can. The Indonesian tax office's PPh Article 26 page sets withholding at 20 percent of the gross payment to a non-resident for services. Article 12 of the India-Indonesia DTAA caps fees for technical services at 10 percent, if you give the client a Form DGT. See the DTAA guide.

How long can an Indonesian client take to pay an IDR invoice under the 2026 realisation rule?

Under Regulation 5(1) of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, as amended on 22 September 2026, export value must be realised within nine months of the invoice date for services. The twelve month period applies only to exports invoiced or settled in INR. Your AD bank can extend the period on request.
