Short answer

Shutterstock pays Indian contributors monthly through PayPal, Payoneer or Skrill once earnings reach your minimum payout, from $25. It does not pay by wire, bank transfer or check, so the provider moves the money to your Indian bank. The marketplace does not publish full fees for its withdrawal methods, so no payout is calculated.

Who this is for: This page is for Indian photographers, illustrators, videographers and other contributors who license stock content through Shutterstock and want their monthly royalties to reach an Indian bank account.

What withdrawal methods does Shutterstock support for India?

How does each Shutterstock withdrawal method work?

How does PayPal to an Indian bank account work for Shutterstock payouts?

You enter the email address of your PayPal account in the Payout information section of Account settings, per How do I set up or fix my earnings payment method?. Shutterstock sends the monthly payout to that PayPal account, and you move it to your bank.

  • Pros: Setup needs only the PayPal account email; Payouts are automatic each month with no request needed; Shutterstock reissues a failed payment in the next cycle once the account details are fixed
  • Cons: Shutterstock may not accept a PayPal account created less than 72 hours earlier; PayPal sets its own fees and exchange rate, which Shutterstock does not list; A payment sent to an inactive or wrong account does not return to the Shutterstock balance and is reissued only in the next cycle
  • Cost: Shutterstock does not publish a payout fee for PayPal. PayPal sets its own fees for receiving and withdrawing the payment. See PayPal fees in India.
  • Time: Shutterstock calculates earnings from about the 3rd of each month and usually sends payouts between the 7th and 15th, per How do I get paid for my work?. The provider then sets how long a transfer to your Indian bank takes.
  • FIRA: Shutterstock's help pages do not mention a FIRA or FIRC. Ask the provider and your Indian bank which inward remittance record they issue when the money reaches your account.
  • Ideal for: Indian contributors who already use PayPal for other overseas income and want one place to see it.

How does Payoneer to an Indian bank account work for Shutterstock payouts?

You select Payoneer in Account settings and either connect an existing Payoneer account or create one, then add your bank details in Payoneer, per How do I receive payment via Payoneer?. Payoneer reviews each application.

  • Pros: Account creation can start from the Shutterstock payment settings page; Bank details are stored in Payoneer, so Shutterstock does not need an email for this method; Payoneer offers support by email, chat and telephone, per Shutterstock
  • Cons: A Payoneer account already used for other companies cannot be reused; Shutterstock asks for a new account with a different email; Payoneer review can take several business days; Accounts set up with a prepaid Mastercard must be moved to a bank account through Payoneer support
  • Cost: Shutterstock does not publish a payout fee for Payoneer. Payoneer sets its own withdrawal and conversion fees. See Payoneer fees in India.
  • Ideal for: Indian contributors opening a new account only for Shutterstock royalties.

How does Skrill work for Shutterstock payouts?

You enter the email address of your Skrill account in Payout information, per How do I change my payment settings?. Shutterstock sends the monthly payout to that Skrill account.

  • Pros: Setup needs only the Skrill account email; Payouts are automatic once the minimum is reached
  • Cons: Shutterstock does not confirm which countries Skrill serves; The account must be at least 72 hours old before Shutterstock accepts it; Skrill fees and exchange rates are not listed by Shutterstock
  • Cost: Shutterstock does not publish a payout fee for Skrill. Skrill sets its own fees.
  • Ideal for: Contributors who already receive other income into Skrill.

How do you set up Shutterstock withdrawals to India?

  1. Create a Shutterstock contributor account and get your first image or clip approved. Accounts flagged as from a high-fraud area can be paid only 90 days after the first approval.
  2. Open the Tax Center and answer its questions. An Indian individual is usually prompted for Form W-8BEN, which you submit online; business forms such as W-8BEN-E are emailed to taxhelp@shutterstock.com.
  3. Check that the name and address in your account are correct before submitting, since Shutterstock pre-fills the W-8BEN from them.
  4. Go to Account settings, then Payout information, and enter your name as it appears in the account in Make payments to, or the business name if you registered as a business.
  5. Select PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer as the payment method. For PayPal or Skrill, enter the account email; for Payoneer, connect or create the account and add your Indian bank details in Payoneer.
  6. Set a minimum payout between $25 and $2,000. Earnings below it roll over to the next month.
  7. Make any changes before the last day of the month, since later changes apply from the following month.
  8. Watch for the payment email once earnings are calculated in the first days of the month and for the transfer between the 7th and 15th, then check Payment history and your provider account.

How much INR do you receive on $2,000, $5,000 and $10,000 from Shutterstock?

Shutterstock does not publish full fees for its withdrawal methods, so INR amounts are not calculated. The methods table above lists every fee it does publish.

What fees does Shutterstock charge before you withdraw?

Shutterstock pays contributors 15 percent to 40 percent of the price it receives, set by six image and video earnings levels, per its Earnings Schedule. Levels reset on 1 January. Each download pays at least $0.10. For example, Shutterstock's own example prices an image at $4.90, so a Level 1 contributor earns about $0.74.

What tax forms and TDS apply to Shutterstock earnings?

Shutterstock pays only contributors with an approved tax form on file, per its W-8BEN FAQ. Indian individuals usually give Form W-8BEN through the Tax Center. Shutterstock withholds US tax on licences bought by US customers, at 30 percent or a lower treaty rate. Its help pages do not describe Indian TDS.

  • W-8BEN: A W-8 form is valid for 3 calendar years, and Shutterstock emails you when a new one is due, per its W-8BEN FAQ. Uploads are suspended if you do not submit a new form within 90 days of the first reminder, per Shutterstock tax form notices. The IRS says foreign persons give the form to the payer. See W-8BEN for Indian freelancers.
  • Treaty rate: Under Article 12(2)(a)(ii) of the India-US tax treaty, US tax on royalties for the use of a copyright of an artistic work paid to an Indian resident may not exceed 15 percent of the gross amount. Shutterstock's W-8BEN FAQ links to its own list of the rates it applies by country. See DTAA for Indian exporters.
  • Form 1042-S: Shutterstock posts Form 1042-S on your Dashboard by 15 March for the previous year, and the download stays live until 15 October, per its 1042-S FAQ. The form shows only US source earnings. Shutterstock does not issue a statement of total annual earnings, so use your Payment history.
  • TDS: Shutterstock's help pages describe US withholding and do not describe deducting Indian TDS. US tax withheld appears in Payment history, per Why is my payment less than what I earned?. Ask a tax adviser whether that US tax can be credited in your Indian return. See foreign tax credit.
  • GST on fees: Shutterstock does not describe invoicing contributors for a commission. Its Terms of Service say royalties are calculated on the price Shutterstock actually receives after refunds, taxes and currency exchange costs. Check your earnings summary for the amounts it shows.
  • GST on exports: A licence supplied to a recipient outside India is an export of services when the five conditions in IGST Act section 2(6) are met, and exports are zero-rated under section 16. Registration is needed when aggregate turnover passes ₹20 lakh under CGST Act section 22. A registered supplier can export under an LUT per CGST Rule 96A. See GST on export of services.
  • Income tax: Shutterstock royalties are taxable in India for a resident. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026, and the presumptive schemes in old sections 44AD and 44ADA now sit in section 58. Whether a scheme fits depends on how the income is classified. See 44AD vs 44ADA.

Do Shutterstock payouts give you FIRA, and what purpose code applies?

  • FIRA: Shutterstock's help pages do not mention a FIRA or FIRC, since it pays PayPal, Payoneer or Skrill and the provider pays your bank. Ask the provider and your bank for the inward remittance record. FIRA is a term used by banks and platforms and is not defined in the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026. See FIRC vs FIRA vs e-BRC.
  • Purpose code: Shutterstock does not publish a purpose code. The RBI purpose code list describes P0902 as "Receipts for use, through licensing arrangements, of produced originals or prototypes (such as manuscripts and films), patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial processes, franchises etc." and P1099 as "Other services not included elsewhere". Ask your AD bank which code it applies. See purpose code for freelancers.
  • EDF: Under Regulation 3 of the FEMA Export and Import Regulations, 2026, services exporters file an EDF within 30 days from the end of the invoice month from 1 October 2026. A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 20 superseded the SOFTEX circulars from that date. Ask your AD bank how it treats royalty payouts. See EDF form for exports.
  • Realisation: Export value must be realised within nine months, or twelve months if invoiced or settled in rupees, under Regulation 5 as amended on 22 September 2026. The AD bank may extend the period. Keep Shutterstock's payment emails and Payment history as the record of each monthly payout.

Why do Shutterstock withdrawals to India fail or get held?

  • Email, no money: A payment shown in Payment history can still fail if the provider account is wrong or not active, per What can I do if I received a payment email but no payment?. Fix the details before the month ends, and Shutterstock reissues the payment automatically in the next cycle.
  • Payout on hold: Shutterstock does not pay without an approved tax form, during a 90-day waiting period, or while an account is disabled or under investigation, per How do I get paid for my work?. Check the Tax Center status and the Earnings Summary message, then fix the item named.
  • Email not accepted: If Shutterstock rejects a PayPal or Skrill email, wait until the account is at least 72 hours old, then try again after 24 hours with a cleared browser cache, per How do I set up or fix my earnings payment method?. Check the email for typing errors.
  • Payoneer link fails: Shutterstock needs a separate Payoneer account with an email not used with Payoneer before, per How do I receive payment via Payoneer?. Confirm your Payoneer login, finish setup inside Payoneer, and contact Payoneer support if the connection still fails.
  • Unclaimed earnings: Earnings left unpaid because of an expired payment method or tax form can be handed to a US state as unclaimed property, per Shutterstock unclaimed property help. You then claim them from that state's unclaimed property office. Keep your address, payout method and tax form current.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shutterstock pay Indian contributors straight into an Indian bank account?

No. Shutterstock does not support wire transfer, bank transfer or checks, per How do I set up or fix my earnings payment method?. Indian contributors choose PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer as the payout method. The chosen provider then sends the money to your Indian bank account and converts it to rupees at its own rate.

What is the minimum payout amount for a Shutterstock contributor?

The Shutterstock minimum payout is $25, and you can raise it up to $2,000 in Payout information, per How do I change my payment settings?. Earnings below your minimum roll over each month. The Terms of Service say you forfeit accrued royalties below the minimum if you cancel your account.

On which dates does Shutterstock send monthly contributor payments?

Shutterstock starts a new cycle at midnight US Eastern time on the 1st, calculates the prior month's earnings from about the 3rd, and usually sends PayPal, Payoneer and Skrill payments between the 7th and 15th, per How do I get paid for my work?. The full process takes about two weeks.

How much US tax does Shutterstock withhold from contributors in India?

Shutterstock withholds US tax on licences bought by US customers, at 30 percent unless a treaty rate applies, per its W-8BEN FAQ. Article 12 of the India-US tax treaty caps tax on copyright royalties at 15 percent. Shutterstock reports the US source earnings and tax withheld on Form 1042-S each year.

Why is a Shutterstock payment lower than the Unpaid Earnings figure?

Unpaid Earnings in Shutterstock shows pre-tax amounts and can include the first days of the new month, per Why is my payment less than what I earned?. The payment email shows the amount after US tax withheld under your W-8 status. The deduction details then appear in your Payment history.

Can a Shutterstock contributor reuse a Payoneer account already used for other clients?

No. Shutterstock asks contributors to create a new Payoneer account for Shutterstock payments using a different email address, per How do I receive payment via Payoneer?. You can register from the Shutterstock Account settings page. Payoneer support can help close an older account you no longer need.

How long does a Shutterstock W-8BEN stay valid?

A W-8BEN on file with Shutterstock is valid for 3 calendar years, per its W-8BEN FAQ. Shutterstock emails you when a new form is due, even if nothing has changed. Without an approved form, earnings keep accruing but are not paid, and uploads stop 90 days after the first reminder.

When do Shutterstock contributor earnings levels reset each year?

Shutterstock resets image and video earnings levels to Level 1 on 1 January each year, per its Earnings Schedule. Image Level 6, at 40 percent, needs over 25,000 licences in the calendar year. Data licences and Unlimited licences do not count toward the level.
